Just waiting to receive my new D70 and now need to think about a decent printer to do the thing justice - what is the best - inkjet? bubblejet? - will I be able to buy something decent for around £200

Many thanks

Liam

You can get a reasonable printer for that price, but it all depends what output you want. If yer lookin at a quick print of something then for that price you'd do well. if however, you want to print in the likes of ektotherm printing (photo-chromatic ink I think?) then it'll set you back around £700 - £800, but for that price you'll get lifetime prints of the highest quality. (you can also add around £1 per print thereafter)

Or you could go to a printer and get them to do it for you! Or even one of those Kodak booth machine things, where u take your memory card.

Lots of options my friend. Oh, not to mention certain printers can print direct from the camera itself!!

Liam,

Epson R300 is very decent printer ($180 in the US) - nice prints up to 8.5x11. Please keep in mind that the major expense will be cartridges, not the printer itself (e.g. R300 uses 6 cartridges, about $15 each).
Cheers

I've got a Canon i865. It produces incredible prints from the D70 on Canon Photo Paper Pro. When I show the prints to people they assume I've been to a photo processor, they are amazed that I've printed them at home. Cost me $299 in Australia, probably less than £200 in the UK. Pay more and you might get better but you have to do your research. This is a good place to start, with the i865. There are other printers discussed on this site too.

How does the Cannon hold up to clogged jets? I've had bad results from epson's constantly clogging up the print heads, that I simply won't buy them anymore. I live in Hawaii where it's somewhat hot and very humid all year long. I've had great luck with HP, but wouldn't mind trying a Cannon if it doesn't clog on me.

I've not bought a D70 yet - so can't say about exact print quality with this camera. But, with images from a 5MP Sony camera my HP 7960 gives really amazing results. I also like the high quality B&W prints that the grey cartridge allows you to get.

I really recommend the 7960.

I bought a Canon s820 two years ago. I refill the seperate ink tanks when needed, and have printed lots of full page images with it. No problems at all - with either refilling the ink tanks or the print head clogging. And I live in the Mohave Desert, where it gets very hot and dry during the summer months.

My prior printer was an Epson, and aside from the hassle of getting a decent color match from it, the printhead was constantly clogging up - even with factory ink carts.

Since switching to Canon, printing has been a real "piece of cake" to get a perfect color match and photo lab quality prints. Also, due to the seperate ink tank system, it is very easy and economical to refill rather than have to spend big bucks on OEM ink carts.

I recently bought a Canon i950, which uses the same ink tank system, but doubles the printed resolution of the s820. This printer's output quality is incredible. Even under a lighted medical magnifier, I cannot see a dot pattern. The colors appear to be a continous solid color. Every bit as good (or better) than anything I have ever had printed at a color lab.

The current version of this printer is the i960, which can be found in the US for around $160, and it even has a $30 rebate on it. You really can't do any better than this unless you spend 2 or 3 times the price...

If you're interested, here's a link to a good review of the Canon i960:

I too have the Canon i865 and I agree that the results are stunning with good paper. This printer is a four colour printer and sells for about £140 in the uk. The Canon i965 is a 6 colour printer at about £199 and there is the i990 a 7 colour printer at about £239. I personally would recommend the i965 or i990. The August 2004 issue of PCPlus has a detailed review of 23 inkjet printers. They tend to come out in favour of Canon printers and scanners but rightly so in my opinion.

I have had my printer for about 14 months now and I have had no problems with it at all and I have done a lot of printing.

I have the Fujifilm CX – 400

If you only won’t to print up to 7x4 this is the printer for you.
It’s a thermal printer, meaning you don’t have to replace inks only the paper.

A roll of paper here in Australia is $28 & you get 40, 6x4 out of a roll, so it works out pretty cheep.

As for archival terms, I’ve had a print hanging on my wall that gets direct sunlight for 3 hours a day; it’s been there for 3.5 months now & hasn’t looked like fading.

I have a Canon S8000 printer as well that sits doing nothing now after getting the Fuji.
If you won’t to go lager prints I would go Epson for shore, “Awesome printers”

Just to put another option out there... have you considered using an on-line printing service? I use photobox (www.photobox.co.uk). You upload your files and choose size/finish/cropping etc. Delivery is cheap and pretty fast. Obviously you'll have to wait a few days to see the results, but the quality is absolutely stunning and the prints are rated for something like 150 years (they're laser printed, so they don't fade as easily as ink-jet).

Ink jet printers are very cheap, but only because they make their money on ink. I got tired of buying new cartridges very quickly! I also got tired of dirty print heads, prints not coming out right, etc.

And no, I don't work for them! :-)
