So I’ve owned the S400 since Christmas, and up until May I was completely enamored with it and thoroughly impressed with it’s capabilities and photo quality. Then it died.

Shots, taken a few seconds apart looked dramatically different,

such as this

and this

so I sent the S400 back to canon, and they replaced the ‘optical unit’.

I used it quite happily for a month and then, bam, again, the same issue crops up.

I took these two last week:

and

again, as before, no settings were changed, the camera is on full auto, the second picture was taken a few seconds later… so I’m wondering what the heck is going on. I’ve sent it back once, they replace the ambiguous ‘optical unit’ (which I’ll assume is the ccd) and it’s starting to malfunction again. I’m a little perturbed to say the least, primarily because this was such a stunning camera.

Am I going crazy? The image above was not shot into the sun, in fact the sun was directly behind me. The s400 is a point and shoot camera so it should be able to take the vivid pictures I was used too… sigh…

It just might be time to get a new camera.

thanks ivan. i've been thinking about that for the last week.. a friend wants to grab the s400 from me for 1 and change... i'd just rather not lay out another $500 on a new cam (and memory) but it looks like I may have to.

it sucks, cuz i was really impressed with the s400, i guess that's part of the reason i'm so preturbed now... and i've personally resulted in the purchase of half a dozen of these things so now my friends are like 'why do you keep sending your's back' and get all antsy.

I'd like to, but it's been 7 months (kind of beyond dell's return policy) and I think i'd have a fun time "well yes, it worked flawlessly for the first 5 months"... I'll call canon on friday... and maybe wait patiently for phil to review the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX2.

I have an honest question for you/the group.

Why would someone have to return it to Dell? I would think that they wouldn't/shouldn't honor the warranty for a Canon-made camera. Canon should honor their product(s) (and provide necessary service). I had my G2 serviced here in Chicago past the one year mark at no-charge. I dropped the camera while the lens was extended and it stuck ;(.

IMO you should get at least a year on that model starting with the time your purchased it from Dell.

Hopefully someone else who's been in your situation can chime in here. Sorry your camera is going bad. I borrow my mother in law's S400 when she visits- it's a nice compact one(!)

Agreed, i won't be calling dell, I'll call canon, i just dont want to deal with the ccd going out, or whatever the problem is, a third time, you know. but I have little choice, $30 to ship or $500 for a new camera.

If they can't repair the unit properly, under consumer law you might be entitled to a replacement S400, or another equivalent model. I don't recall if it varies state by state, or is a federal law. Probably worth posting here.
