Hey there,

I'm considering leaving analog photography and taking up digital. I've been shopping around for the D70 and D100, since I have Nikon glass, although I'll miss some of my manual focus lenses.

Is there ever more than a few dollars variation in the pricing on these camera? Are there any 'reputable' gray market dealers?

I can't see a lot of diference between the D100 and D70-is there a compelling reason to get one over the other?

Thanks for your time for some starter questions,

Mike

D70 seems like the better fit for many - it lacks very few critical features compared to the D100 and even surpasses it in some areas (AE system is like the F5, for example). Some folks miss having a mirror lock-up but I haven't had any sharpness problems using a good tripod.

Don't give up your manual focus lenses (or contact me if you're gonna sell them!) - you can use them just fine by using the focus indicator in the viewfinder. It's a little dot that indicates when something is in focus under the active focus sensor. You can use a manual focus lens pretty much the same as if you were using a split-prism viewfinder.

For the difference in cost I am super pleased with my D70.

My concern with the MF lenses isn't focus, its losing autoexposure as well. The main advantages of the D100 I can see are it is a metal frame camera and can use more flashes, if I read the information correctly.

I just wish I could find a below-list price on them. I'm quite cheap by nature. Never had a gray market problem either.

Mike,

Noticed today that Cameta (E-bay) is selling "Demo" D100's for $915!

Maybe a sign of a pending announcement?

For what it's worth - a great price on a D-100 for sure.

Tom

Demo scares me more than gray market. Think of all the grubby hands shaking the camera around before it gets to you. I'd rather try my luck with Brooklynn dealers.

Looks like the best price listed on these forums is 1202, unless someone out there can beat it.

Thanks

get a job at best buy. Employee pricing on a D70 is $1100 for the kit.

Yopu can have some MF Nikkors 'chipped' and they work on
My concern with the MF lenses isn't focus, its losing autoexposure

Take a look at:

The main advantages of the D100 I can see are it is a

I traded my D100 for a pair of D70s and SB800s. Build quality seems the same but the D70 sure is a feather weight. Obviously neither are D1 series build quality.
...and can use more flashes, if I read the
information correctly.
The D70 works in standard 1970s auto mode with most flashes. Anyway the D100 only works reliably in auto mode ! Nikon didn't get DTTL right until the D2H and D70 with a SB800.

The D70 writes to CF cards faster, has 1/500 flash sync, 90% reliable TTL flash (as good as the F5 imho), and is cheap. The D100 has the vertical grip option with voice memo and a slighter bigger, clearer viewfinder - that's it. If you don't shoot flash, particularly outdoors then a D100 will serve you well.

I've heard about the chipping of the MF lenses. My problem is that the lenses I love are a couple of Cat telephotos. Small max. apertures that aren't chipable according to his web site.

I assume you meant to say D70 at the end as the general recommendation instead of D100? I do love that vertical grip. Pricey, tho. Wish that there was a gray marketer that you could trust out there.

I don't think any discount would be worth working at BestBuy. No
offense to those that do.

Where is that deal ?. Is it bundle or just body ?
Email Anna @annaholcdw.com. Price for the kit is $1202.24. Shipping is in the area of $24.00. Unfortionatly Anna is in Chicago so I would have to pay tax making the deal no better or no worse than any of the internet sites out there. As such, I elected to purchase, on line, from a camera store.

Thanks for finding the thread...my search skills drop as the night wears on. CDW only sells USA products. I'd still like to find a gray market price for this setup.

Thanks Mike.

I found that deal after going down few pages. Nikon D70 has a lot of movement. There are multiple topics in matter of minutes. Hard to catch up.

I saved 200 or more by buying D70 kit, SB-600, 1GB Ultra2 and Remote.

Anna was great to work with.

BTW. Above are on back order until July 30th !!!!!!
