I see so much talk about how people hate white lens because they draw attention and things like that.

Well what about the good points a big white lens can do for you ?

I know that event at events where I do have full photo access, walking thru the gate with a big white supertele over my shoulder made not a single person bother to stop me and make sure I was supposed to be there.

I was shooting some bikes a few days ago with some other photogs and when the riders came by me, they would always do wheelies and other things to show off for the camera.

I dont really go out and try to shoot pretty girls, but I know a guy who does and they always gladly pose for him and smile. IVe seen other people with a point and shot try to take a shot and get dirty looks

Im sure there are other points and of course there are bad points too, but thought it was about time someone talked positive about those big white lens and the image they give you

Uh oh... You're going to make me upgrade from the 70-200 f/4 L to the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS.

Though lately I've been more tempted to upgrade from my 10D to a used 1D.

Maybe someday I'll be able to join the elite white-lense club. =)

Isn't 70-200mm f/4L white already? I guess you need the big part. ;)

Meanwhile, I do agree with the original poster about the special treatments. It is kinda like driving a Viper for valet parking...

Hahahaha....dont worry mate!...i have only just bought a 70-200 f4 titchy little white lens...only because it was the cheaper of the two options (sig 2.8 or ef f4) and even i would be snubbed by some of the Big white Boys !!!!

funny this conversation never happens on the Nikon lens forum???...there big lenses with VR are as equal in every aspect!!

get a tin of magnolia out and give em a new lease of life!!

How is the new 70-200 f4 holding up for you? I just posted a thread a few minutes ago about it. Got any sample pics?

I think it is the size [in lenses ;)] that matters the most, as I don't see any whining Nikon shooters hanging around.

Having said that, I do know they do make gray color Nikon lenses, but I've never seen one in person. Here is one for example:

...but your entire attitude: if you look and act like a seasonned (pro)photographer, many times you get treated like one ;-))

Is that wide open? I have been tempted by reviews and prospects saying the 70-200 f/2.8 IS is the only way to go but I am grounded by reality and a smaller budget....glad to see such a great photo from that lens and one that is straight out of the camera.

Did you save as .raw or .jpeg?

I recently had the opportunity to photograph President Bush when he came to my hometown. While waiting for him to show up, I must have been asked 10 times. What newspaper are you shooting for?

When the President showed up, he only stayed for about 5-10 minutes. While scanning the crowd, He noticed my Big Honking White 100-400L and started talking directly to my camera. I know if I had on a smaller lens, I wouldn't have been able to get these shots. I would have never gotten his attention.

I love my Big White Lens!

Wow very lucky!!...just wondering when a terrorist converts a long lens to weapon!!

but then a photograph taken at an opportune moment could cause more damage!!

I took out my first lens (100-400L IS) to a loal preserve and everyone was looking at me (except the 600mm folks). Bunch of people asked me about my camera and the lens. And some of them stop by to take a look where I was pointing the lens. I didn't mind the attention. Maybe coz it was first time for me.
