I was given an extremely damaged portait of my aunt's grandparents. It had everything wrong with it you can think of including many parts cracked and withered leaving substantial holes. But its a portrait of her grandparents so saving it was very important. It took me 2 days of meticulous work. I even bought two additional restoration books for advice on specific trouble spots. In the end, it was beautiful! I modemed it to Ophoto and the new 8x10 copies were stunning. Textbook example of how restoration works when you place the old 8x10 next to the new one. My family mounted a copy for dispay at a family party to the aunt could see it. The aunt finally saw it, hugged me and thanked me for my time with it.

So why the "Oh NO!!!!!!!" ? Because I learned this morning that secretly she's seething mad. She thinks "restoring means making the original damaged photo...."restored". She doesn't want my "copy" I made on "his computer". She wants the ripped and damamged original "restored". You jsut can't win. I would suggest that anyone taking on a paid assignment to restore an old photo, that you clearly state in writing that you will not be REPAIRING the original full of holes and missing parts.

In the little town I live in outside of Portland is a photo-retoucher who's been doing this type of work since the early 1950's.

To this day he uses an airbrush and regular brushes and inks. He's been trying to sell the business and retire but can't find a buyer.

He also holds computer retouching and Photoshop in particular in utter disdain. He's quite an interesting fellow to talk with to say the least.

Oh well!

Sometimes you're the windshield and sometimes you're the bug.

I think we need to hand this problem over to our resident diplomat, feivel. He will instruct you how to get your picture back, have your aunt pay you big bucks for your efforts, and make her adore you for life.

Why did you not post the original here and at least get some suggestions. but, you're right, get it in writing up front. I should think an aunt could be forgiving once you explain. GC

Sorry to read your tale... I know I'd be heart-broken if it happened to me.

At least you know that you did a nice thing for your aunt and family.

"What we here is failure to communicate"

Talk with your Aunt and give her all of the facts and data on why the original can not be restored..Ask her for her suggestions on anything that could be improved on the picture you made...maybe the colours are not quite right....Involve her in the process...
