New Firmware -- hacked --

Need tonnes more info such as
  • Examples of the changes
  • Proof someone actually installed this (author takes photo of LCD confirming firmware install)
  • What hacks have been added
  • Any info associated
i dont think people will rush to install something from a zip file onto an expensive camera without reassurance.

:)

Ok I'll bite. Assuming this is for real, are we suppose to update version A or B? Both?

Of course, I'm waiting for at least 10 people to have successfully update it before I do :-)

Like:

How does MLU work?

How many people in the hak group are using the hacked FW?

Are there any reported problems/side effects?

Suggestion:

Don't just put the BIN file in the zip, include some sort of documentation like a README file.

Oh, and, thanks for your efforts!

From the filename it looks exactly like its replacing b and its a 1/3 of the file size than the official b update from Nikon.

Can't trust this at all, unless i see proof. Its not that hard to edit a .bin file and delete chunks of stuff and convince people its hacked with new features only to find it corrupts your camera.

:p

I advise everyone to be cautious as OldSchool mentioned... there was a post on the D70_Hak forum for Nikon Capture that had a virus... second thought is even if it did include everything listed, if there was a problem it could void your warranty. If someone spent the time to make legitimate improvements to the firmware they would likely include documentation... I think I will wait and see how this plays out BUT I am very sketical and hope others don't have problems. Perhaps the cautious among us will be wrong but I don't think so!

When the 300D hack came out, I was one of the first to try it, because I could see that what the hacker said was true (he had only changed a jump instruction to a nop).

So, it was a measured risk.

Here, on the other hand, it seems too vague.

I haven't seen the official Nikon firmware, because mine came already updated, but someone in this thread said this one was half the size. That really can't be. Unless I get more info I can confirm, I am not risking. This might be a really bad practical joke.

Also, before anyone will jump, it will be good to know if we can reload the previous Nikon firmware if it does not work out.
