Not only are they pelicans, but they are WHITE pelicans! We have brown and white pelicans here but photographing the white ones is a little difficult because they are shyer than the brown pelicans.

Oh, do take more photos, they look really great against the foggy (?) sky too.

Thanks ... The cloudy weather does give it a certain effect. I forgot to set my white ballance so the shots needed some post to bring out any life in them...glad you liked them

I'd love to have a chance to see some brown pellicans ... I plan on getting back there because apparently there is a bay there with like about 15 of them. I'm gonna dedicate a day to it. well....I might do a little fishing too.
It's about an hour and a half out of town so I can't just "swing by" ....
thanks for the comments Dee

share your pellican shots with us ...I'd love to see them
I was dumbfounded when I found pelicans in southern Saskatchewan
(at a really fabulous park called Sask. Landing), but apparently
there are Pelicans in Canada!
This is a fantastic shot, really lovely. Well done, and thanks for
sharing.

Awesome Len. Just awesome!! I've not seen Pelicans for about 15 years near Thunder Bay. Last time I saw them was on Lake Nipigon. Where did you find these guys? They can be found in droves on Lake of the Woods near Kenora. Again, just an fantastic shot. Also, I've been seeing your photos on the "Source" website. Nice work there as well. Where have you been anyways??

A picture is worth a thousand words, at least....

There is supposed to be two places in Marin County north of the Golden Gate Bridge where one can park and watch white pelicans. Where I see them is crossing the San Mateo bridge heading toward Hayward. The first salt pond, it's just barely east of the toll plaza has a group of White Pelicans, but they are usually either fishing in a group on the water (they don't dive in like the brown pelicans do) or else resting in the back (south) on some raised parts of the shallow salt pond.

If you don't know what to look for you might think they were egrets or herons unless you were able to spot the big yellow beaks.

When we went to some camel races in Benecia, we saw white pelicans flying around, but they were too far away for any decent shots.

For you to have captured what you did -- you were in a great spot, and lucky!

I hope you have an opportunity to return and take more!

Thanks. I've been hiding out taking a sabatacle from posting as i'm trying to figure out my D70.

I've also been working like a demon. These guys were at sturgeon lake down the black sturgeon rd.

I've heard of them on lake nipigon but never been there.

I saw your shots on the source as well. I love the action in the firefighter challenge. nice job.
I'd love to go and find some on the lake of the woods. Never been there either.

good to hear from you . talk to you soon

and in Hecla in Eastern Manitoba. I used to live in Kenora, (on Lake of the Woods), and don't recall seeing that many pelicans, but maybe I just wasn't looking. Seeing but not looking, you know, that non-photographer disease. At Hecla the pelicans and the loons partner each other for fishing. I watched that one day, long ago, before I bought my F707, so you will just have to believe me. Pelicans are amazing to watch in flight, and this is a beautiful pic. Well done, Mr Bluz.

I am brutal for this...I could have a beautiful scene staring at me and I won't notice until someone says....Hey...that would make a nice photo...guess that will come with time

How do the pellicans and the loons partner each other?

How pathetic is that? I'm getting old. I remember that there were several loons and each loon had at least one pelican sitting on the water, hanging out with it. The loons were diving deep under the water. When they popped back up the pelicans were stealing the food off them, I think. I don't know why the loons put up with it. I was fascinated because I hadn't seen that type of inter species cooperation before, but I was with friends who were talking golf, and were impatient with me, so I didn't really have time to scope it out.

never heard of anything like that before. definately would've been neat to see.
