I have the D70 and the SB800 ... I am thinking about the possibility to purchase an stand and one umbrella and use the SB800 with it but I wonder:

1.- is it possible to mount the SB800 in one stand, do you know whcih one will work well?

2.- Is the SB800 powerful enough to work with an umbrella and still work with shutter speeds of > 1/60s and f8-11

Thanks for your advise.

Miguel

It doesn't matter what the shutterspeed is. The flash fires at a very high speed so you can use 1/60 or 1/500 and the camera will capture the same amount of light from the flash. What does matter to getting the right exposure when using flash is the apeture.

I believe the SB800 provides enough light to be used with an umbrella and still use higher apetures depending on the distance of the light source to your subject.

Back several months ago, somebody (I don't remember who) posted a cool shot using the D70 and an umbrella and he even included a shot of his set-up. I just did a quick search of the archives on this forum, but couldn't find it. You might try a search of the the lighting technique and/or D100/D1/D2 forums as well. It might have been posted in that forum before they broke off the D70 into its own forum.

Hi

I use my vivitar 285 with remote sensor lead on my D70 and it works great. It is used at 45 deg to 0ne side of the suject. A reflector is used at the other side to cut down on shadows.

Hope to get a sb800 soon.

1- Yes.. I bought this adapter to mont the flash on the stand here in brazil.. but i know that B&H have exactly the same..and it's very cheap.. you can mount either on a studio stand or on a camera tripod..

2- yes.. I often use it at full power.. and normally i use with the boucer - that eats even more light, but the shadows are even softer. Don't worry..it's powerfull enouch.
and as someone said, the shutter spead doesnt affect the flash exposure

usually i use the setup + a silver reflector to fill the shadows.. but here are two examples just using the setup:

(just 1 umbrella, without the bouncer)

So that is just one silver lined umbrella with the SB800 shooting into it and the light reflecting off of the inside of the umbrella? Are you using a sync cable or are you using the SB800 on remote? They look great.

Thanks.

No, It's not a silver umbrella.. I use a white diffuser (is the spelling right?) umbrella..(altough, I'll buy a silver and a white umbrella this month.. I can post comparations..)

and for the last shoot, i added a silver reflector (on the opposite side) to fill in the shadows.
Umbrella camera left, silver reflector camera right..

felipedana,

Thanks for the pics and info, I've been considering setting something like this up since spending big bucks on a studio lighting setup is not an option for me, glad to see that the SB-800 can be used effectively for this type of lighting.

Is this the adapter you have, it looks similar?

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=42160&is=REG

It says it's for a hot-shoe with a knurled locking ring as opposed to a lever like the SB-800. In the pics you posted it looks like you're using the hot-shoe adapter that came with the SB-800, did you just remove the adapter that came with the clamp to mount the SB-800's own?

Also, what size stand and umbrella are you using?

Thanks,

Jeff

I'm using the sb800 in wireless mode.. but I'll get a cord (and another sb800).. because the internal flash works OK firering the sb800.. but not 100%.. sometimes it wont fire in some positions.. (even in a closed room...)

Hi Jeff,
Yes! this is the adapter I use!

And you're right about the shoe adapter.. mine came with the same in the photo, but I removed and I'm using the one that came with the sb800 (if screws in perfectly..and it's much better, once you get it..you will see what i mean)..

My stand is a normal studio stand.. around 2.1 meters tall and the umbrella I've been using is a white diffuser (the go-thru type).. sorry, don't know how to say it in english.. but it's like a trasparent-white type.. large size.

note: I'll buy a silver and a white umbrella (reflector) and will post some results.. by now this is the only one I have..
Thanks for the pics and info, I've been considering setting
