Is there a way to make PSE remember that when you choose to open a file it shows thumbnails instead of defaulting to a list and you have to select view thumbnails each time? Just curious. Thanks.

Not sure. That might be a Windows setting (if you're using Windows). You can make all folders display thumbnails, and the open dialog might also do thumbnails. Not sure, though.

Alternatively, you can have a explorer window open behind Photoshop set to thumbnails, and just drag & drop the files you want into Photoshop... That's what I do, more or less. I find it more flexible than an open dialog in Photoshop. Haven't gotten used to the Browser thingie yet, don't know if that's easier to use or not.

Right now, I open the program, click the icon for opening files, and there is a dialog box that shows a list of filenames. Then I go to the view menu and select thumbnails because it comes up as a list everytime. I have set windows so it shows thumbnails for all folders and it does what it is supposed to. However, PSE seems to only want to give me a list and will not set to default to thumbnails. Thanks for any feedback.

See how the Open Dialog behaves in other programs, such as Notepad, Word, and MS Paint. I think the default view for the Open Dialog API object is List, and I don't think you can change that. Try the separate window with thumbnails.

(Hint: If your window is maximized and you can't drag & drop into Photoshop directly, you can drag a file onto the Start Bar, hover it over Photoshop icon, in 1 second Photoshop maximizes, and then you can release the drag in Photoshop and it'll open the file. Don't release ON the Start Bar because it'll complain and not work, just hold it there a second.)

It does appear to be something specific to the Open Dialog box. I like your work around. I found out about the hint after having the error pop up about 3 times. If I had just paid attention to what it said, I would have only done it once. Guess I am just your typical stubborn guy not wanting to pay attention to directions. :) Thanks again.

It has been awhile since I used PS Elements, but it does have a file browser as I recall. Had one before PS. GC

Right now, I open the program, click the icon for opening files,
and there is a dialog box that shows a list of filenames.
Ok.
Then I
go to the view menu and select thumbnails because it comes up as a
list everytime.
Huh? The View menu item isn't active when the Open dialog box is displayed, and when I close the Open dialog box, the View menu is active but completely grayed out.
I have set windows so it shows thumbnails for all
folders and it does what it is supposed to. However, PSE seems to
only want to give me a list and will not set to default to
thumbnails. Thanks for any feedback.

This has come up before here with little help. I went to adobe forums and it seems that the default for your view menu is established by the OS, not PS. Here was one 'fix'. (you might want to go to adobe forums and search 'view menu defaults' or 'view menu thumbnails' etc.)

try this:

go into Windows Explorer and open a folder such as My Documents. Now choose View~Details. Along the top of the file listing area, you see Name, Type, Size, Modified. If you click any one of these, it will change how your files are sorted in the list. For example, you click Modified to sort your files by the date they were modified.

Now...here’s the part that made Windows save this sorting information everywhere. Hold down the Ctrl key and click the X in the upper right-hand corner of the Window to close it. Now whenever you run a Windows application that uses the File Open, Save, or Save As dialog boxes, the files are listed in Date Modified order rather than Alphabetically

I know also that there is a bug in windows regarding 'saving' defaults which involves a registry fix. I had to do this with my computer. Don't know if it is exactly related though. If the same sort of thing is happening in windows - where you have certain folders set up in a certain way on 'viewing' and you are losing that setting, then the fix is necessary. I have a link if you need it.

Thanks for the help. I have learned through much searching that you can force the sort as described by Kent above, but apparently you cannot change the default view. That must be done by Adobe or Adobe must give us a method like Word uses to adjust the default and make it stick. Oh well. Thanks everyone for your help. I at least have my detailed view sorted the way I like and I can use Windows Explorer and a drag and drop method for opening pictures from now on.

go to window and click on "File Browser" You should see all of the thuumbnails in the file that you chose.I like it because it show thumbnails of PSDs also

The little button in the Open Dialog that lets you change how icons are listed. It's also in Right-mouse-click menu, View -> Thumbnails, for instance.
