Hi,

I could use a little help from someone who knows about sending out things to printers from a marketing department. I have some knowledge of digital photography, I have an Olympus C2020Z.

The marketing department in my company is looking for a digital camera. Does anyone know the issues, and more importantly the answers to the issuses that are invloved using a camera in a marketing department ?

Any help or recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks
Daryl

The departamental destination of the camera is irrelevant.

The question is - the use of the camera. Are they going to use it to for high res glossies, are they going to posts pictures on the web, are they going to have action shots, are they going to use it for still models?
Printers usually will get a processed picture anyway.

Hi Max,

I would say they are going to use it for stills, glossies and the web. I don't think they will be doing action shots.
Any recommendations ?

Thanks

OK- now you eliminated 3/4 of cameras out there. You need at least a 3 megapixel camera.
I went through the same process myself 9 months ago, so follow my logic.

A) price range, mine was about $1000. The cheapest 3Mg are probably in 650-700 range,

there is a bunch of good ones in 750-1100 and some excellent ones in 1500 -2000. Pro models are above that; 3000-24000.00

B) Picture quality and color rendering. Once you pick the price range, look to through the sample pictures and compare them. My suggestion is to download the highest res pics available and then blow them up 400%-1000%. Also look at the colors. Each manufacturer uses different algorythm so the colors do differ. My top 3 choices were Kodak (best color), Olympus (nicest rendering, good color) Nikon (sharpest picture, good color).

C) Go to Phill's Side-by-Side page, pick 3 of best choices and compare the features.
I rejected Olympus because of SmartMedia at that point.
D) Handle the camera -I rejected Kodak at this stage but picked up a Sony.

E) Go through the entire process again to revalidate your choices. Dumped Sony because of its proprietory technology, Memory Stick. (Go figure - I am an Apple user - if thats not proprietory tech, what is?)

F) Get a retailer which fits your needs. If you need some handholding, go to local bricks and mortar pro shop, they are usually not any more expensive than anybody else. If you are sure of yourself and do not need any stinking help you can get one from a REPUTABLE e-tailer like Outpost or State Street.Save on sales tax.

I picked a Nikon 990. I am very satisfied with my choice. If I was buying today I would wait for the next generation of digicams. They will be hitting the market about August. 3 Mg will be replaced with 4-5 Mg class. Same price, more features.

Other factors that entered into my considerations: USB connectivity, recording formats (I needed TIFF), Mac support, value, batteries / chargers, etc.
Good luck.
Thanks

Hi Max,

Thanks for your input, currently I have them looking at 4 possible choices :

1. Sony Mavica cd1000 (their choice they liked the CD idea, they believe that storage media could be an issue when shooting on locations, however they don't like the price for a 2 mega pixel camera)
2. Olympus C-3030z

3. Olympus C-3040z (my choice, I also recommended the Nikon 990 which they nixed)
4. Canon Powershot G1 (someone in their department personally owns one)

They don't seem too concerned at this point about price to look into the Kodak, so I think I will leave that one out. They are also VERY eager to get their hands on a camera fast, so waiting doen't seem to be an option either (although I agree, personally I am waiting because I already have something that does the job for me).

Company politics and purchasing go hand in hand here. I'm betting they end up purchasing the Canon Powershot G1 for just that reason !

Thanks again
Daryl
having said all that, I came across 3.1 megapixel Kodak DC4800 WITH
64Mg FlashCard for $550.00. Now I would take a close look at that
baby.

Check the retailer first.

I was debating between the Olympus and the Nikon and ended up with the Nikon because I got a deal on an used Coolpix 950 which left me with money to buy a good printer and some other accessories. I wasn't that found of the Canon. The Olympus seem to have a great lens so if I were to choose again I would still pick either the Olympus or the Coolpix 990 (why didn't they like it, because of the svivel?? that's God-sent!!).

G1 is a good choice, but if they are in this class they should also look at D1x and the Olympus SLR not the 3030 or 3040. I mean apples to apples and all that..........
I am with Petra ---- why did they reject the 990? Very interesting......

I don't really know why they ruled out the Nikon so fast, I displayed it in a side by side comparison and they quickly eliminated it (I think the guy who just bought the Canon G1 had influenced them already against it for some reason, they didn't say why, I explained that it is a very highly rated camera and one of the ones I would recommend). It's true it's not really an apples to apples comparison, I thinks it more of a apples to apples in our actual budget range and if they get someone to bite on the "lets blow our budget" camera, than they will seriously look into the higher costing cameras.
