Do you now think in still pictures?

Tell you what is really sad, when I had a non-Olympus camera, I used to look at the (real) sky and see noise artefacts in it. Thank God that's finished now.
There was a time in my life, many years ago, that I was a videofile
  • I just loved the Beta and believe it or not was convinced by
reading magazines and such that the Beta format was actually
superior in picture quality to the VHS.

But since I've bought my first serious digital camera last summer,
as I've learned more about it I know think in still pictures. When
my camera is not with me and I see 3 fishermen carrying their
tackle toward the water, I think that would be a great photo. I
look up and see a plane crossing over a daytime moon and leaving
its condensation cloud behind and start to think what a great
photo. I look down from my wifes office window (6th floor) and see
the Amtrak pulling into Charleston and wish I had my camera with
me. The list goes on. It's a shutter bug that I think we have all
caught.

So, do you think in still pictures?

Mine is always at least within a minute reach from me at all times. Can't get that great shot without your camera!!

And an answer to your question....Yes, I do thing in still life, everything is a picture in the making, just waiting for me to shoot it.

I often do look at things and imagine the still image, both in colour and B/W. I like B/W photography a lot.

Unlike some of you, though, I often do have my camera with me! I take it with me most places :).

I now walk around imagining what Photoshop tools would improve what I'm seeing (those mountains would look better with a large radius unsharp mask . . )

Wayne has some awesome pics in his gallery! and here are some of my presentable efforts as well! Hope that sways you in the direction of a 770

I had a fully manual SLR camera for many years. This year, I went in for the C770, and have been taking MANY more pics than I could have imagined, with that old SLR. Two things here come to mind.. its very cost effective for me, here in India, apart from the initial investment, which was hefty... Secondly, being used to manual, I still find it VERY strange, how I can get the results immediately, as well as the autofocus/superb metering.. My SLR (a carena) had some semblance of metering in it, but I always used to calculate the light/aperture values by myself, and had made a chart to help me with the lighting, I almost never got the metering wrong. Now, it gave up its ghost this year, and I can't have it repaired anywhere .. :(

With digital, everything's instant and fast. I dislike the AF on the 770 though, suppose when a pigeon is flying towards you (and the buggers fly fast, takes hardly a couple seconds before they're overhead and gone), you lock focus, and then shoot, its focused on the old point and the shot is slightly out... while, with the manual, I could twist the ring to where I thought the correct focus was, and would get a clean shot... also, the 0.2s shutter lag on pre-focus delays me, its very low, but it makes a difference in those needed shots where just that lil bit faster can make a difference. I'm not complaining though, I take my 770, and always find so many situations in which I automatically think "oo thats a nice pic ... that kid running on the street, that cow wandering across in thick traffic, oh that camelcart!! aha, a nice snack vendor... look at that old goat there..... " just so many things that pop into mind that wouldn't, when I had me SLR .. All in all, I'm very happy!

Apart from that, being used to 3D animation/2D editing in premiere/AfterFx, the video in the 770 comes in handy as well. I'm kinda used to moving pixels , and it doesn't hurt to have short clips once in a while, for those times I need them!

Here, I'd like to thank wayne and others who helped me choose my C770. My only gripe is the shabby manual focusing system... apart from that.... not a prob...
