Anyone ever hear of New York Institute of Photography? I saw there ad in the back of a photography magazine and they offer a digital photography course that looks good. Just wanted to know if you guys ever heard of this place and if it's worth the money.

Here's a link to their digital photography course:

I'm essentially looking to better myself as a photographer, but also as a digital photographer. My photoshop skills are no were near were I'd like them to be and this course looks like it might help out in that department.

If anyone knows of any other place that offers distance photography learning...I'm open for anything.

Thanks in advance.

Yep, I went through it back in 1992 and loved it. Great course. Highly recommended. I have since told others about it and they also liked it.

I've heard of them and am interested in seeing what they offer.

i'd personally love to take a correspondence course from them.

i really do think they'll teach me something new and give me better technique to work with.

on the other hand, i've asked a few pros and one person who works for a newspaper.

a NYIP certificate won't get you a job.

so, do it to better yourself, but it won't take you anywhere.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll defintly have to sign up for the course sometime. Still saving for my rebel, but as soon as I get it (and several other accessories) - I'll sign up.

Thanks again.

The wording they use is "certification of completion". Not sure if that count's as a degree per se. It costs as much as a college class though....

Although that got me thinking, how do photographers get work? Is it by attending fancy art schools and getting years of general training - or by the pictures they take? I would assume if one had a portfolio full of great shots that would coun't more then any schooling they've had...but then again - what do I know?

Why not its an accredited New York State school? Just like any
college course is, I believe.

I would recommend it. I'm currently enrolled and will be a better photographer because of it. By the way, if you enquire to the school (so that they get your address), they periodically send out deals saving you $100-$150 on enrollment. That's what I did.

Are you taking the digital course? The other course really looked good as well, but I think I'd like to focus more on the digital side of things.

How are you enjoying the course?

I recall reading on their website that they send out "tapes" - is that the case? I'm not sure that I have an actual tape player anymore, and the VHS machines are all packed away in the basement.

I'm interested in the course, and hoping that they have "upgraded" their technology a bit.

Any insights would be really helpful!

Thanks!

Yeah, that was a big concern of mine since I don't own a tape player anymore. I recently received some brochures from them and it seems that they've upgraded to using CD's.

I'm defintly going to sign up, but I'll think I'll wait until I get my rebel first. I should have it and most of the accessories I need by the end of the year. So as a new years resolution to become a better photographer - I'll sign up for this course.

thanks to all those who replied!
