I just got my E-10 from Berger Brothers (thank Brian M!). Took a few pictures during lunch on P and M modes with and without flash and autofocus. What I noticed is on autofocus the images are "soft" while with manual focus they seem right on. My digital experince has been with a Kodak DC210 (4 years) and film experience with various Nikons (FE2 most recently, 30 years total). So is this focus thing normal or should I consider a return?

The serial # start 100 and I don't know how to check the frimware version.

TIA--Cleave

I bought an e-10 two weeks ago and the serial number started with 105 and the firmware was 120. Had to exchange due to a pixel problem. The new one is also serial number 105...I am exchanging again due to an even worse Pixel problem. New e-10 will be here tomorrow. The focus on both cameras was great both AF and M modes. Have you checked for hot pixels?

Hi Cleave,

I'm not saying there isn't anything wrong with your new E10.

But, I will let you know that the first few shots I took with mine, it seemed the AF was off a bit. Then I started to study my pictures to see where exactly it was focusing on. I found that usually it was something I hadn't noticed in front of my subject.

This camera does take some getting used to. It's not a quick learner, or atleast it wasn't for me.

I'd suggest giving it a couple days. Use it, play around and see if maybe your pictures don't improve. IF they don't, then possibly you do have a defective camera. But I think you'll notice things coming into focus the more you shoot.

Vance.

I took some "lense cap" images but haven't been able to check them yet. Will check them later. Which vendor are you dealing with?

Thanks.

I seemed to notice the same thing that another person talked about, that the camera would move past focus. I would see a focused image for a moment before the autofocus settled on a setting. I have played with film autofocus cameras but have never owned one, outside of a point-and-shoot Olympus. I'll try a more scientific setup (since I'm an engineer) to see if there's a quanitifiable (v. subjective) problem.

Any additional advice is welcome.

Thanks.

I ran into focus issues with my first E-10 and refused to believe it for a long time. Now I'm a happy owner of an E-10 that has much more accurate focus in Auto and Manual modes.

I wanted to mention one thing about a comment made where the camera seems to focus just a step beyond the intended subject. This seemed to be the case with the first E-10 camera. I first thought parallax error in the IR sensor was to blame, but given that the IR focus seems quite good with camera number two I have concluded that it's one of two things that's at fault.

A. some cameras shipped with misalligned IR sensors during mfg.

B. some cameras shipped with out of alignment lens/viewfinder optics.

I'd still like to see a comment about what the differences are in the three version of firmware in the cameras that have shipped. NO FUNCTIONAL difference is a poor excuse from Olympus, obviously something has been changed, but where? In focusing, metering, flash control, CF controller?

Many people seem to be having good results with the microdrive on later cameras, but from my past experiece with Nikon I'm sticking to CF cards!

PS - If someone from Olympus wants to spill the beans I'll accept anomyous email, but plase tell it to us straight as to what was changed in the camera!

Cleave I wouldnt wrestle with it call Brad or Dan or Larry, they will send you out a new one, and you can send that one back :-)

No worries... Its all about the service!

I bought from PhotoAlley. They have been great so far. They are paying to have the new e-10 overnighted to me. I hope this one has a good ccd.

If you are in doubt, I'd get a replacement!
