Nikon Firmware Hack

Rob Galbraith reports on a D1 hack by LPA Design...

http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-4214-4299

I dont' think their giving it away....
The Canon 300D guys have got all sorts of nice added features from
a firmware hack.

It seems to me MLU, multiple custom curves, and a closest
focussing setting using only the central sensor would be nice
additions to the D70. I for one would happily pay US$20 for such a
firmware hack, even if it only gave one of the above features.
Remembering of course that now we have a flashable firmware from
Nikon we coulld easily go back to stock.

Now, if 100 of us were willing to pay $20, we'd have enough to
commision the Russian 300D hacker to do a D70 hack and buy him a
D70 to do it with, as he'd need one for testing, and I believe he
only has a Canon.

Of course we might also lose our $20, but hey isn't life a gamble
anyway?

If enough are interested I'd be happy to try and get such a project
underway.

Now that would enable the forum members to really benefit the D70
community.

Before someone raises it I should note that the firmware download
from Nikon Asia does not require agreeing to any licence or
restriction on its use.

Thoughts??????

Hey nanomatrix!
It seems they install a additional circuit inside the camera for it to work.
There must be someway...

Hi Guys,

take a look at the update packages and you will know everything you need.

Let's put it simply, the D70 runs an REALOS/FR which means it uses an Fujitsu FR30 type microprocessor (32-bit). Firmware B seems to be the BIOS and operating system along with menus, etc. and Firmware A "Q70_Main" seems to be sort of a "user" program that is run after the initialization phase.

BTW: The D70 firmware looks for files named AD70????.BIN and BD70????.BIN on drive A:, which is the compact flash card, for firmware updates.

If you search on the web you will find a free assembler for the FR30 series. I haven't looked for a disassambler, but this might also be out somewhere.

steffen
It just seems to me that features like MLU or ISO 3200 would just
not be compiled into the binary. There wouldn't be anything in the
binary to "unlock." They had time to see what happened to the 300D.
snip
And anyway, it would have taken a Nikon engineer no more than 10
minutes to include the D100 anti-shake MLU into the D70 firmware.
It was left out because it's the ONLY FEATURE that keeps the D100
from being 100% obsolete. It's price differentiation. Maybe it will
be included in a firmware update after the D100 ceases production.
snip
AN INTERESTING PROJECT- -- would be to RE the firmware and write a
new, GNU fw from scratch.

Not in the last version as everyone could download it and use it......though I could only download it after loggin-in.

Stil I don't think so. No need to do so if is for free.
Murray
I don't think Nikon has a problem in giving us these functions.
This I base on the fact they did not criple the D70 like Canon did
to the 300D

It is problably more whether it can done on the D70 hardware and
whether it will overcomplicate the camera for entry level users.
They could of course add this under the CSM detailed menu.

I think with the current D70 we have 99-100 % of what this baby can
do with whatever hack or firmware.

TTL for SB24 isn't possible, the CCD sensor doesn't reflect light in the way that film does....
please make MLU and TTL for SB24 please !

That's interesting... a lot of the media has been reporting that it's an LSI (Logic) processor ... I need a screwdriver... :-)

That's true nanomatrix!
If we just know what is the CPU and what kind of code, things will
get a lot faster!
I guess we shall open the D70 to read the info on the ICs on the
circuit board.

Hello :-)

The FR30 manual is at http://edevice.fujitsu.com/fj/MANUAL/MANUALp/en-pdf/CM71-10102-2E.pdf

A debugger that may support it is referenced at http://sources.redhat.com/ml/binutils/2002-06/msg00403.html and http://www.unaformec.org/doc/gdb/NEWS ; also see http://www.oopo.net/consoledev/files/binutils-2.14-PS2-20040614.patch

If you're really into this and want a microcontroller out of the camera you can work with =($715), see http://microcontrollershop.com/product_info.php?cPath=116&products_id=567

Generic info about REALOS/FR is at http://www.fme.fujitsu.com/products/micro/32bit/realos_osek_vdx.html while the programming manual is at edevice.fujitsu.com/fj/MANUAL/ MANUALp/en-pdf/CM81-00316-1E.pdf

Not that I advocate hacking your D70 or anything like that, but I would be interested in hearing about any such ventures.

Now this wuld be nice...Any budding coders out there that could write a functional equivalent of Nikon Capture Camera Control to run on a PDA? I believe the one of the Toshiba units has host USB, and there's now a CF USB card avalable for other PDA's. Just think how nice a PDA would be as the ultimate remote conrol, allowing camera control and showng taken pictures!

Before the days of outsorcing, you had insourcing. You don't believe it? Look at a list of all the great "American Brains" of the XXth Century:

van Neumann: Hungarian
von Braun: German
Einstein: German
Godel: Austrian
Borland's founder: French
Henry Kissinger: Austrian
Karpov: Russian

Of course, you also evened things up a little by importing Gov. Arnold, who seriously lowered the immigrant IQ average ;-)

So, I am not surprised the hacks come from the former Soviet Bloc. They had to do some serious hacking in the old days, to fly MIR missions on computers less powerfuul than our old Atari machines.

The next time you complain about outsourcing? Just think how much your life has improved in the last 100 years, thanks to foreign brain power. Look at your D70, for starters.

I, for one, would love to see my country doing some outsourcing. That would prove that our living standards are so high we can outsource our more tedious jobs and move on to more creative stuff.
