I gave it a shot at the Grand-daddy of the American displays - why not start right at the top! LOL! I'm very happy with the results, being my first attempt ever at fireworks. Gave my brand new Slik 400 DX a trial run as well...

500mm of reach for me was barely enought for me!

They are fantastic shots, really!

I like most the one with a red background, and those building silhouette make the picture much more interesting,
well done!

Guido

I watched the Macy's display on TV, it was a great show. I'd like to know how they did the Smiley Faces.

Dear lonnit

Nice shots!

My wife and I were just in New York and really love your photos, especially the ones featuring the Empire State Building.

Love the silhouette on this one. The colour in the streams fit perfectly.

This firework's texture is just so animation-like - it's spectacular.

lonnit, these are great. most folks just grab the bursts.. and while certainly pretty, they leave me wanting more. you've framed your shots with some ground-based interest, and instantly-recognizable interest, as well! congratulations, on a great job.

I wanted to get out for some fireworks shots but didn't make it out. Yours are just amazing. Thanks you sharing them!

Though being your first attempt, you succeded very well. Importantly, you included foreground in the picture. That does make a difference.

That looks like an oil painting of fireworks! :)

Couldn't agree more Dan! So many photgraphers shoot only the fireworks bloom, and do not include elements supporting the scene. Just a shot of a fireworks bloom is boring. Add a fairgrounds, reflecting pool of water, people enjoying the show, and the pictures become much more interesting!

Simply Fantastic Lonnit!
Trust you to come up with something spectacular!

Thanks for all the great feedback. When I was posting them it was dawning on me that I've never really seen fireworks shots like these - yet, I don't know why they are so different. I had read the fireworks thread that gave recommendations on how to shoot them. I scanned the posts quickly but didn't commit anything to memory. When started shooting last night I decided to wing it. Maybe the way I shot was not by the book so that's why they look so different? Basically I set the camera to f/8 and stayed in AV mode. I figured I'd let the shutter speed vary by itself as needed so I'd get a variety of shutter speeds - hence a variety of effects. I pretty much used ISO100 except for a while when I wanted to try to get a bit faster shutter speeds, so I went to ISO200.

Whatever... it seemed to have worked! LOL!

Lonnit, Great shots! I love the first one. Fantastic. Looking at your photos and thinking of what you did so different I can point out a few things. You had a nice silhouette as a foreground element. It looks like not too long of exposures were set so as there wasn't that many firework elements included in each shot. I've noticed by viewing some other photos that some try to fit many fireworks into one exposure as opposed to only a few. It looks like you were in midtown somewhere, possibly up in the 50s or 60s, looking downtown? (which to me really makes it stand out even more as I know a lot of people like to shoot them from B'klyn and Queens). Completely astounding for a first time!

Great composition and exposure. I had tickets for the "official" Macy's grandstand right on the East River. Unfortunately, there were TV cameras on us and spotlights turned on when they filmed us. This did NOT enhance photography attempts. In addition, no large bags or tripods were allowed so I had to bring my old Canon G2 and leave the 10D at home. Most importantly, Queens, rather than any Manhattan background, was the only land mass available for adding to the compositon. I did get a few decent shots, but yours were outstanding.

Where were you standing?...I will try that location next year...could only be better.

and you chose a great background. They are interesting and different, and technically perfect :)

Thank you for sharing,
Slava
