Karel.........Isn't that one of the most aggravating things? Really irks me. For a few cents more of the same plastic Oly could have done it right. As I recall this gyp is not new ....it seems that most of the 35mm lenses that I bought in my long lifetime presented the exact same problem. I intend to rig a cover with some appropriate plastic and a wide elastic band.....will have to find a seamstress to complete it I suppose. You are not alone. Dav.

because the back glass element of the lens could get scratched
while in my bag. Has anybody found a good solution to this
problem? Or is it just my cap that is falling off.

...small cap is worthless...matter of fact, can't even find mine right now...I suppose a clip-on or screw-on 55mm (or 49mm) cap would be in order...probably from 2filter.com...

Dav,

Thank you for responding. I am glad that I am not alone. All my 35mm lenses have nice hard screw on covers. So I could not believe my eyes when I saw this plastic crap that Oly had supplied. Well we will have to come up with some solution, but Oly should have thought about it during the design phase.

Newby,

I have thought about it. But lenses have inside threads while the back of the B300 has an outside thread. So the 55 mm clip-on or screw-on caps would not fit. Perhaps, if we could find a push on plastic cap that would have the same diameter as the body of the lense rather than that tiny thread piece. I let you know if I come up with something.

Had the same problem. I should have ordered a cap for the stepup ring. Went to a local used camera shop and for $2.00 I got a cap that snaps in nice on the ring...Bob

How about using the rear cap from a Filter Stack Cap set? They come is numerous sizes, including 55mm. I believe they are usually made of aluminum, but you might be able to find a cheaper plastic set.

...you're right...guess I had my "innies" and "outties" confused...

Good idea Rich.

I had just been using an old 49mm UV filter to screw onto the 55 - 49mm ring. It keeps the dust out, but it IS glass, not the best protector.

I also protect my B300 like Hide does. It's very inconvenience though because you have to detach the UV filter before attaching the B300 to your camera then put it back on when you're done using it - The user manual for the B300 said do not use any filter with the B300 teleconverter.

I usually don't leave the 49
just use a 55mm UV filter to protect the lens. I also use the UV
filter for my camera and both filters seem to do its job. On both
filters, I noticed a few scratches that I don't know when/where
how it hapened, but it surely protected the lenses. It's an
inexpensive solution.

i agree...for a few extra pennies in material and some common sense by the designer would have gone a long way with we B300 customers. i am having the same problem with mine..who wants a step-up ring floating around all that glass.... and an elastic band to hold a .01 cent lense back cap...

Karel I leave my stepup ring on and cover lens with lid off my shaving cream. Works great.

What brand of shaving cream. I'll switch if they are throwing in a free cap for the B-300. :-)

Thank you all. I think that there are several good suggestions in this thread. I certainly will try them.

I better rush to the store before they are out of Gillette Foamies.
This is probably the simplest solution; the simple ones are
ussually the best.
...check your medicine cabinets and kitchen pantry for plastic bottle lids that you already have...I've found a couple that could work...although I still believe I can find a screw on "back lens" cover for 55mm (or a cover for other sizes...used as replacements for lost 35mm back lens covers) at 2filter...will post tomorrow if successful, as I will persue this more then...
...happy hunting...

Hi all, I have been lurking in this site for several months before I got my C2100UZ last month, and I just got my B300 from a local store today. I had the guy try some "Snap Caps" and a 46mm fits ok, not great, but much better than the one that comes with it. I keep the 49-> 55 step up ring on the B300.

Hope this helps. I know I have found a lot of help in this forum, maybe its my turn now.

What an absolutely great solution. THIS IS GREAT! Leave your step-up ring in place and slide the shave cream cap over the back of the lens------ fits snugly and neatly and covers and protects up to the flared shoulder of the lens body. Comes in blue, green, red and white. FABULOUS! What a joke the original cover was. I ended up with a giant thumbprint on the back lens when trying to remove it from the pouch. The provided cover hasn't a chance of staying in place. The product is Gillette, 11 oz. foamy shave cream. Keep the cap and give the cream away if you don't prefer to use it. THANKS DOGLEADER! (There appears to be other aerosol products with the same size cap. You may have one under the sink) Dav
