How to soften a portrait picture ? (pic. sample)

Hi!

This is my first humble attempt using Picture Window Pro.

Did a color correction, and then used the Advanced Sharpner with some blur/noise remval of skin, spec removal and some tiny sharpning. Used the clone tool to paint back details to the nose and mouth.

Well,

I'm sorry that it was not possible to thank all of you one by one. It seems like most you are very much unhappy about the makeup of the first model, here is another model for you to play with I think with a better makeup and my version of softening which I have learned from you. Thanks again to all of you.

Wrong that there are too many freckles .... it's a sought after look in models right now.

i personally love freckles, they're almost up there with dimples!

so therefore you are wrong, politically incorrect, and your opinion has no value :-)

I did this with simple steps:
  • duplicate layer twice
  • gaussian blur 3% on 1st copy layer
  • reveal all layer mask on 2nd cpoy
  • black brush 60% opac. 70% flow and paint layer mask to reveal only the skin to be softened. 75% brush opacity for neck
  • healing brush to disolve marks under eyes
  • USM 100% amt., .7 radius 0 thres. on eyes only
  • merge 1st and 2nd layers
  • color select darker skin area on merged layer
  • desaturate 10-15%
  • flatten image
... Lucas

And beautiful model too. You got the skin just about right. Clone out the fly-away hair and the blue line in the background to it polish off. Nice job.

  • softened skin with a masked blur+noise layer
  • multiplied left side and screened right side slightly
  • slight contrast curve - eyes only
  • evened out lip color
  • added a hint of blush
  • dodged and burnt hair highlights/shadows
  • added Omni light behind her head
  • slght highlight's soft glow

I took a try on the last portrait but when I try to post it, it shows up with jpg artifacts.... not clear and sharp. This happens to me now and then when posting images here, and I can't figure out why.

I slip the image into PS, (as is, with no resizing) work on it and then save in jpg.

I understand that the image is low rez, but the original shown here is clear and sharp..... why is it my retouched version shows up in preview, with slightly jagged edges?.... It happens now and then, even though I always seem to follow the same proceedure.

What am I doing wrong?

I had the same 'problem' - my advice - follow Vikki - she posts in original on these, anything less will show artifacting even if you don't specify the size, when it comes here it is resized to at least 'large'.
