Ok everyone, here it is...

We've been good and earnest students just recently, exercising our technical skills and sharing knowledge and expertise, now it's time to have some fun.

The next challenge will be all about humour photography.

Humour is a part of everyday life. Everywhere you look there is something going on that can make you laugh. A natural scene, a staged scene, it doesn’t really matter, if its funny, capture it in a photograph and put it in the challenge. The subject can cover everything from slapstick "pie in the face stuff" to sarcasm, passing through witty social comment and bizarre juxtapositions.

We've all seen humoristic photos passing round the net, let's all use our imaginations and try to capture moment that will make everyone laugh!

Challenge 72 begins at 8:00am EST (New York time) on Friday, July 2nd, 2004, and will end at 6:00pm EST (New York time) on Tuesday, July 13th, 2004. you will have two full weekends to obtain images. Please note that the times have changed slightly in order to make them more convenient for us Europeans.

Learning from the experience of the last challenge, I believe that the rules concerning the number of entries should remain as they are now. Although I had some doubts about it when Andy proposed it, I think on reflection that limiting the eligible gallery to one entry only, forced me to be much more serious and self critical.

However,as the topic is not a particularly technical one, I have decided not to allow the possibility of posting for critiques in the forum.

So the rules stand now as follows:
  • only one (1) image will be allowed in the eligible gallery. three (3) images may be entered in the exhibition gallery. remember, exhibition can be for "new" images, too. so, you have a total of four images that you can enter into the stf challenge.
  • please put your name and a unique title on your image. it really helps to keep voting issues to a minimum.
  • please resize your images to not larger than 800 pixels on the longest side before uploading to pbase, and save with a medium compression.
  • As usual, post processing is allowed, however due to the nature of the subject, I would prefer to see "live performances" rather than photoshop montages. Therefore, please restrain yourselves...
  • please don't move images around in the galleries...respect first-come-first-serve. you can repost an image into its original spot if it's the same image (that's just been altered). a new image should be placed at the end of the gallery. this should avoid any confusion, and everyone will be treated equally.
  • please keep your questions and concerns posted in this thread for best response.
  • challenge time period will run from Friday July 2nd, 2004, 8am EST (New York time), through Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at 6pm EST (New York time). time tables will be posted in the galleries. voting will begin shortly afterwards.
  • eligible images must be taken with a sony digital camera within the challenge time period. the winner of the eligible gallery will host the next challenge. all entries should include a date indicating when the photo was taken and the original exif data.
  • exhibition images can be obtained with any camera at any time. if you do not want to host the next Challenge, this is the gallery you should post your images to.
  • remember, the login name to pbase is "stfchallenge"; and the password is "stfpost".
  • here’s a link to the stfchallenge 72 galleries page:
http://www.pbase.com/stfchallenge/challenge_72

The gallery might not be up yet but I'll do my best to put it up as soon as possible.

So, come on everyone, please join in & have fun with "Humour photography" ...veterans and newcomers alike. this challenge is really about fun this time, learning and sharing our common interest, our funny moments of life and our love for photography. I really look forward to your enthusiasm and participation in challenge 72, so please get involved, look around you and have a lot of fun!

Enjoy !!!

loooking forward to making some photo-toons. here's one i aspire to:

(elliot erwitt)

Penelope,

Congratulations on your win, by the way.

Regarding this Challenge, the topic of humor can be quite broad, so I wanted to check on a few things to clarify.

1. Are there any rules in either gallery regarding nudity, leudness, crude humor, etc.? Not that I consider myself a photographer of such things, occasionally a photograph may have some of those qualities and be humorous. Would those be acceptable in the galleries as well? (I don't necessarily mean 'adult' photographs...just for example a person giving the middle finger after a fall, a bare butt or breast accidentally exposing, a bad word written on something, etc.)

2. I am assuming the photograph itself must be humorous...in other words, the photo needs to stand on its own without a story to lend the humor. There may be photos which are odd, or maybe slightly silly, that become much more funny when a brief story or setting is provided...my goal will be to try to find photographic situations that are humorous WITHOUT any story. Would this be the correct translation of the challenge?

Thank you for the clarifications!

Justin: I think the answer to your first question is covered by the general rules of the forum which you will find under Rules/help at the top of the page.

You are absolutely right about your second question, of course the photo should be humerous on its own, without any acompanying story, however captions are allowed and can sometimes add to the humour of the photo.

..........Penelope

OK. I figured we'd be mature about it, as long as the picture content is not purposely offensive or pointlessly crude. Since none will be directly imbedded here, I assume then that those types of things would be OK.

BTW - I have a shot that made me think of that question...not a shot to be entered here since it is only funny to those of us who were there at the time, but a shot of an overweight, mid-60s female bartender covered in tattoos who flashed us while shooting double middle fingers in the background while I was taking a picture of two friends at the bar. I didn't notice it until AFTER I looked at the pic in the camera. Thepic is very low quality and not worthy of posting, but it made the little idea bulb go off over my head.

It,and she, is raunchy but funny, so I thought maybe other people might have similar shots they may wish to post in the galleries.

Thanks for the response!

Thanks Penelope...but it really isn't worthy! The lighting is horrible, and it was taken at 640x480 on my very first Mavica digital camera many many years ago. It just doesn't look good enough to post. But the subject matter was certainly funny.

Back then, I still used my film camera 99% of the time, and used the Mavica as a sort-of e-mail device...I shot in low resolution and small size so I could load up alot on a floppy disc, and e-mail them out to friends I saw or visited.

I'll head out to the local bars and see if I can drum up another crazy bartender!
This sounds like an interesting shot, it could be the type of thing
that we are looking for. If you're not sure about it, why don't
you publish it here in the forum and see what people
think.......Penelope

I can't, so it's gonna be a real challenge...(oh..ha ha) to come up with anything during the time. Here's the goofiest sign I ran into when I was in China. I'm in the pic as an cautionary example of what happens when you DO drama. http://www.fototime.com/ {3A7C2D30-9389-469E-AEBF-173E7F4E8500} picture.JPG

Hey thats funny, LOL,( hahaha), I tried to can't think what they meant by it and failed. It's a great photo, why don't you put it in the challenge....Penelope

Some great shots already in the exhibition gallery and I hope I'll see the elligible gallery filling up very soon.

I'm having lots of fun with this topic, keep them coming!
