Sunday I spent the day relaxing and lounging in my backyard, and while watching the squirrels hop and bound around the yard, I decided to get down low and try their point of view:

They were a little curious at first

They were even a little cautious with my peace offering:

But slowly

Surely

Patiently

They accepted my offer

They didn't mind me, but my camera was still a little scary

Hunger won over fear in the end

Others weren't so slow and shy

And stole quite a few peace offerings

Even made some not-so-nice attacks on my rodent friends

Which really rattled their nerves and put them on edge

I tried, but I couldn't get them to come in the pool with me

So that's it...a day down on squirrel level...just trying to experiment and have a little fun. Please feel free to comment good or bad.

All of the above taken with the super-tiny and nicely portable U20

Without which I probably could not have gotten so close to the squirrels.

Thank you...it was fun.

I was spending the day in the pool anyway...so why not bring the camera out and sit it at poolside so when the little critters come up to see what's happening, I can snap a few.

The U20 and other small cameras are perfect for this type of fun shooting.

I've got 20-25 squirrels living in my yard, and feed them peanuts daily, so they come right up to me (when I'm in the pool, they come to the edge and wait for me to come up from underwater then flick their tail until I see them).

Looks like we all caused a little squirrel burnout.

If this dies away, I may try one last bump tomorrow night, and if it dies again, I'll retire it to the dusty closet shelf where some of my other bad posts, bad pictures, or ill-timed posts ended up!

i just cant seem to make my squirrels trust me. in fact once they know you or the camera wont hurt them, they become bolder.

I started semi-training the squirrels in my yard about 7 years ago to come into the yard for peanuts after getting tired of them knocking down the bird feeder every other day. I figured if I feed them separately, they will come to look for food in another place.

I left peanuts out for them, then slowly introduced myself in the background, then near, then actually standing with the nuts and tossing them to each squirrel that came up to me. Some became confident enough to begin taking from my hand, and climbing up my pants leg to retrieve them when I didn't lean over fast enough.

So now, they come up to the sliding glass door and peer into the house with their hands up to the glass looking for me when I get home from work, and if I go in the pool they all come around the edge of the pool expecting me to have nuts with me!

They are very friendly and have never nipped or bitten...and they are only so trusting with me (when neighbors or friends come by they scurry away, so as not to bother other passerby).

Smart little rodents!

It probably would have been only a few months...but I came to like the little buggers. They are quite cute, have little personalities, and are virtually like my pets. So now I feed them almost out of obligation because they just look so desperate and needy staring into my window each afternoon standing on their hind feet with their front paws against the glass.

I found out some interesting things about squirrels...like their average life span (grey squirrels) runs around 4-6 years. Since there are two identifyable squirrels I've been feeding for a full 7 years and they are still looking healthy (plus they were already full grown when I started feeding them)...I'd say human interaction, a fat healthy diet of nuts, and a fairly predator and car safe yard to live in can increase their life span quite a bit!

One squirrel I nicknamed "limpy" since the back half of her tail doesn't lift off the ground (since I've first seen her) is at least 8 years old, and is still having 1-2 new litters each year in the tree in my yard. That's why I've gone from feeding 3 squirrels a day, to now going through a 5Lb bag of peanuts from Costco per week with 20-30 squirrels!

Great series Justin, that looked like a lot of fun.

Really good job, I like the squirrel point of view.

Thanks for sharing your creative squirrel shots,

Thought you might enjoy this one. The squirrel is a Columbian ground squirrel. He and the blue jay were cadging for handouts at a highway rest stop. Finally the squirrel decided he should be the only one getting the goodies. So he chased away the bird. I almost got it... Ann

My favorite picture is the one I'm taking right now

Thanks Dee...I just got finished feeding the critters again this evening (sans camera).

Ducks are favorites of mine...I love feeding them and photographing them.

Pidgeons could be interesting...just beware when you are down at their level...they'll land all over you while you are laying down with them and they'll poop all over you!

(I like pidgeons and don't see many down here, but having been to several bigger cities loaded with them I can understand why New Yorkers call them rats-with-wings).

Wow...those are fat looking little squirrels. I guess they are almost like groundhogs.

I've seen many a fight between the birds and squirrels. Usually the squirrels will charge into a stand of birds to make them jump out of the way...but the birds usually get the last revenge by swooping down and clawing the squirrels' heads and making them drop their nuts and spin around in a panic.

That's a nice shot of the squirrel's attitude...too bad the bird just got out of the way. Those blue jays are darned fast, and they rarely stand still for even a few seconds.
