There is a long thread about the MKII buttons, that require 10
fingers to push at the same time to operate. It is so highly
controversial. TWo camps : red and blue. one critique the other
worship whatever in this machine.
I want to reboot and brainstorm in different but more fundamental
aspect of the construction of this remarkable camera.
Why did Canon build MKII the way they did. They can do it so easy
to operate as Toyata build Lexus. Sophisticated, powerful and yet
so smooth and one can drive it while sleeping and still arrive
safely home.
But the Japanese have competition as far as cars are concerned: the
Germans. So they have to do what we Americans like: soothing
smoothness. Not so with Cameras.
Here in the world of photography, the Kingdom of the Sun, that is.
The Japanese totally dominate the market. The Americans own the
Golden Arches of MCDonald. They push grease and fries down people's
throat around the world. The weird thing is; Around the world
people love American for this "healthy food."
Now the Japanese are sticking it to us. They love things the hard
way. It is the pain just to see them using all the energy to speak.
They said: you want our cameras? you operate the hard way we love:
use all your ten fingers and maybe you teeth . You have no choice.
And they are right, we have no choice. Some of us already are
assimilated to the Japanese culture: they love all the buttons of
MKII and want even more.

But don't you think your remarks in and of themselves are bad remarks? Covering them under the blanket of "humor" doesn't make it any less so.Some are taking it hard about my thread. No, I am not serious about
the comparison. If some one doesn't find it funny, so bad. But than
we don't really need any real bad blood around here. "can we get
along?" Any bad remark is uncalled for.

I'm betting 1Ds Mk II will be identical too. But have a look at old 1 series, they don't seem to have changed much at all over the last 15 years. In think they just needed to consider familiarity to existing
1-series users versus starting with something new. This time, they
stuck with familiarity. Next time, they'll probably start with a
fresh re-design. That's all. It's not some crazy conspiracy.
They just decided to stick to the current interface for one more
generation.
It's a deliberate act of professional snobbery and I'm all for it. I don't want any dropkick being able to say he owns a Mk II and knows how to use it. In fact why do they even ship it with software and a manual. All pros should be able to work this thing out in a few months (are you dedicated or not) as well as write their own RAW converters on the back of one of their lovely 13x19 prints. Why are TVs so easy to use? Japanese companies own that market for
all practical purposes. And while we're at it...Why is the 10D so
easy to use? I'll answer that one...because it is for a different
market segment than the 1DMk2 and takes different needs into
account. When the next 10D comes out and it blows away the
competion, do you think they'll make it harder to use than the
current 10D just because they'll have a leg-up? Fat chance.
--when you can't hear the person's tone of voice or watch their body
language, it is sometimes very hard to see that a statement is
meant to be taken lightly, or that it is just an attempt at some
humor. i've been tricked by this many times, even answering in
anger to someone who was just being ironic with no malicious intent.
i always look at my posts in "preview" to look again and try to
avoid misunderstandings.
of course some people don't get a joke at all. you can't please
everyone.
