This question will show how truly green I am.

I have a tripod that came with an iPix kit years ago. Below is a photo of what the top of it looks like (without the Pano head). What I need to know is if this is what the top of all tripods look like, or is this something special designed by iPix? I'm not real good with eyeballing sizes, but the bolt on top looks like about 1/4".

I'd like to put a ball head like this on it, if it will fit.

Well Scott, it depends what size it is!!

It's a great picture, but there isn't any kind of independent scale in it, like a rule, say, or even a coin that can be recognised!!

That said, there are only two sizes of tripod thread that are used internationally. 3/8" and 1/4" and the threads equate to old fashioned British Whitworth, more or less.

So your picture could show either, depending on how massively constructed the rest of the tripod is --- or isn't.

But since other thread sizes are practically unheard of, it is safe to say it is 1/4" if your camera screws into it properly.

Wind the camera on gently, perhaps by swizzling the column, but WITHOUT tightening up fully --- that should provide the information you need.

Regards,
Baz

From what I understand, most tripod heads work w/ a 3/8" or a 1/4" thread...I bought a Bogen ballhead that didn't work with the tripod but Adorama sold me a bushing that made the ballhead fit with the tripod for a few dollars.

So if you do encounter such a problem, it is easily fixable.

99.9% of all tripod heads have a 1/4"-20 thread. It is of cause impossible to make 100% sure from a picture. Go to any hardware store and buy a 1/4"-20 nut, about $0.06, and try it. Then you will know for sure. ...... Rolf

as Barrie said: it's a British thread. Don't know if a US-1/4"-nut will fit (my two Euro cent :))

Scoot,

It looks like a 3001D, or N. As far as I know, all 3001's have a 3/8' bolt. I believe it's 3/8 -16. I have a 3001BD (same as the D, except it has black legs) and the bolt is 3/8.

Steve
Maybe this will help. My tripod is a Manfrotto by Bogen 3001. It
doesn't say if that's 3001D, 3001BN, etc, but it does say 3001 on
it.

The head is also a Manfrotto by Bogen.

Does that help at all?

Don't worry — listen to pso and the other respondents.

Your camera tripod mount, will have a female thread of 1/4" and 20 turns per inch. This is common to all cameras, other than large or medium format professional ones.

The tripod will probably have a male 3/8" thread, with 16 turns per inch, which equates to most heads, and all medium/large format cameras.

Your new pistol grip might have either thread, at either end, but more likey be 3/8" to interface with the tripod, and 1/4" to interface with the camera.

We don't know which of these two common camera/tripod threads you have (the 3/8" is mainly used with heavy, medium or large-format cameras).

But, if it doesn't fit, it can be made to fit, with an easily found adapter, which is like a thick washer, with one thread (female) cut on the underside, and the other (male) thread on the topside.

I hope this thing fits:

It's NOT a Bogen, I don't think.

This is the normal baseplate for a Bogen/Manfrotto tripod. The tread is larger than that on your camera, so the camera won´t fit directly.

Most ball-heads or three-way heads will fit. It is only the smallest ball heads that use 1/4 (same tread as on the camera).
