How do you carry your stuff?

This may seem like an odd question but I was wondering how you carry your stuff when you are working...

Do you attach your most used lenses to your belt - the APO 75-300 has a case with a belt attachment. Do you carry a special bag with all your stuff in etc...

I am doing quite a lot of sports shots, I pretty much need to have my gear with me as I move around a lot and since I don't currently have an assistant I need to have everything I need available. What I do at the moment is leave the stuffi in the car (Out of sight). I often end up having to park a fair distance away which is really time wasting when having to transfer shots off my memory cards to my laptop so I can continue shooting. Changing lenses and flash is also a time waster...

So since I have not kitted up for moving my stuff around I was wondering what you do...

I currently have two 256m memory cards and plan to get an xdrive which will make things a lot easier when one card is full.

When I know when I need to use another lens, I use my Mini Trekker. I have the camera over my shoulder with the lens I use, and the rest in the bag. The bag is very comfortable to carry, so it will not bother you.

If I'm at places where I don't know when I will be needing another lens, I use a photo west, so that I can switch fast. Not so comfortable to carry, but much quicker to use.

Perhaps another stupid question but what is a "photo west"

If you get the urge and want to you can see some of my pix here...

Many of the pics were very good. A photo west is a west with pockets where you can put everything. The Street and Field system from Lowepro is an example.

Dwayne,

I usually get to the site and have everything stashed into a Lowe Pro photo runner. It seems to take the canon 75-300 + 300D (with kit lens attached) and my 50mm 1.8 just fine. Plus a battery and a couple of cards. To the outside of the bag I have strapped the Manfrotto 680B monopod with quick release head (manfrotto 484 rc2). I get to the sidelines, put the big lens on, everything else goes into the bag. I then setup on the monopod and happily walk the sidelines with the bag attached to my waist. If the action gets a bit close for the monopod the quick release allows me to free up the camera in a jiffy! You could easily sacrifice the 50mm and get an X drive into the compartment instead.

I also have a larger Nova 4 Lowe Pro bag with other kit in it as well, but that seems to only come out in more relaxed environments.

Cheers,
Lachlan

Hey guys thanks so much for your responses - this really helps me a lot. The next time I go into the store I will be a lot more informed.

I have a LowePro mini trekker, which is large enough for my camera, flash and several lenses plus x-drive, has a separate pocket for notebook (paper, not electronic), passport etc. and yet is small enough to be taken onto an aircraft as hand luggage.

It's also got a tripod carrier system which I haven't used yet.

A bag/backpack is really the sort of thing you need to try out in the shop, rather than choose from an online supplier.

I stuff everything into my special, extra-large photography underpants.

I have a big, LowePro case, but sometimes i just want to carry the camera and a spare CF card. I hit upon an idea with my EOS500N which seems to work well.

I like to have a camera around my neck and ready to fire. ER cases are ok, but tend to get in the way, so i bought a padded triangle shape form-factor case ( if that makes sense - am currently using a British CCS classic ).

The problem is that it gets in the way by having 2 straps - one for camera and one for the case. If you have just a strap on the case, then you risk dropping the camera and if you have just a camera strap, then everytime you want to take a pic, you have to remove the case and put it down somewhere or clasp it under your armpit !!!!

With me so far ?? - good :)

I found the solution in a climbing shop - i bought a small caribiner (?) - the spring loaded hook clip that climbers use to clip onto ropes n things .

Its only 2" long and it is now attached to the case permanently - if i want to take a pic i just undo the case, take it off and then clip it to the belt loop of my jeans - that way i dont put it down and loose it somewhere.

I can also use the case to store my sunnies etc, when taking pics !!!!

Michael

If ive done this right, then Pics of this set-up should be viewable here at http://www.mghweb.co.uk/case.htm

LMAO!! Hope you bring along a soft-cloth to clean your lenses before use!

When asked by the ladies if that is a lens in your pocket or are you happy to see them you are not say lens are you...

Actually I tried getting a special pair of large photography underpants too but when I got to the shop I found that they were smaller than what I was already wearing... my wife was very proud LOL :-)

No, my assistant usually just gives them a quick rub, that usually does the trick.
