All: Just got off the phone with Lexar Sales and the 80X CF
cards arrived yesterday and are being sent out to Retailers now.
I went ahead and ordered a 1GB 80X direct (Fedex 3-day) for
$305...I saw a couple of sites advertising $269 or $279 (pre-order)
but the bigger sites were listing around $320...so $299 direct isn't
so bad??

I know that this card will be much faster in the MkII, but what increased download times can you expect with the D300 over the Sandisk Ultra II, or Extreme?

You can get the 512MB version for 116.00

Gary: I would guess that this 80X card would be just "slightly" faster than
the Sandisk...Now, if Canon would get off their tails and add WA support

in the next firmware release, then you would probably notice quite a difference. I just figure one should invest in the latest/fastest at the time
so that 1-2 years from now, it won't be so obsolete.

Thanks.. darn..I have to pay tax..

Seriously, it seems that speed is not a part of what the Rebel does well. I doubt that such a fast card will help with write times.

Please give us a report comparing this new card to your old cards...

Sure. I ordered mine yesterday. I will give a full report when I receive it.

It's a very nice deal and I know I am getting a high quality memory card. I also purchased the Sandisk 512MB for 59.99 on http://www.amazon.com

FWIW, I have Lexar 12x and 40x cards. There is a huge difference in write time. I believe the 40x is faster than the camera, but I'd rather pay a bit more and get the most out of the DR than waste precious shooting time waiting for a slow card.

Using a USB 2.0 or firewire card reader. And future Canons will support faster cards so that you'll notive performance benefits when you take shots and bursts.

All these fast cards don't do any good for you - the speed is limited by the camera (which is around 16-20x as far as i know). Yes, downloading photos from CF will be fast, but why do you need it? I post-process photos much much slower anyway - so while i'm done with first 10 photos, the rest will be downloaded even on the slowest cards.

It is similar to the CD writerr speed ratings. After a certain point, there will be little difference in the transfer speed increase due to the bottlenecks elsewhere, such as the camera CF card interface or the CF card reader. Besides, the price of the memory card is dropping. Unless the camera can use it, the extra speed will not be noticeable.

A firmware upgrade will, in all likelihood, produce nothing, as this is more a physical hardware constraint: bus speed.

So don't look to have any faster card write speed in the 300D than what you already have.

CF reader to computer speed is all that is gained.

This is not always true. There is ways around bus speed or to circumvent it.

Eric: If the firmware upgrade included support for WA, then you would notice a difference in write speed...up to 30% with the old WA technology and more with the new WA technology. WA is a more advanced ATA protocol...has nothing to do with bus speed.

I got a Lexar card with my 300D and when i went to buy a 512 i agonised over the Lexar WA or a cheaper Sandisk, because i also wanted to buy a card reader. I went for the Lexar and thought i would buy the card reader later and was v pleased when i got it home and found a "jumpshot" cardreader and ImageRescue software in the box !!!!!!!! - result :)
