Are we going to see the Jog Dial in all of the new Sony products for 2001-2002?

Maybe so. It certainly seems to simpify what was a rather fiddley menu system in their former camera line-up of past years.

Not much translation needed for the picture below:

You just roll the Jog Dial to choose which setting you want to change (EV, Aperture or Shutter), click to choose it, and then turn the dial again to change the value for that setting. Turn, click, turn, click, snap. Done!!

I'.ve owned both a Sony cell phone and DV video camera that use the jog wheel. I seem to remember reading about it being a patented design that Sony planned to use throughout their product lines.

Looks like tha't exactly what is happening. It certainly provides significant ease of use for palette navigation.

I've used it on Sony's Digital camcorders, and it's seems like a very intuitive control. (Going off on a short tangent here, it just occurred to me how similar this control is to the scroll wheel on a mouse.) Anyway, I certainly think it's better than a button (or set of buttons), where to get to a setting you have to press the button repeatedly, or hold the button in and wait for the value to slowly increment/decrement to get where you want it. (similar to setting a digital alarm clock). With the jog dial, you can turn it as fast or slow as you want to get to the desired setting. And it certainly doesn't seem as annnoying as repeatedly pushing a button as fast as you can to get to a setting quickly.

I tried it with PocketPC's. It's a good thing. I would say it's definitely better than the current 4-way button and the [+][-] buttons for the F/S control on the 505V when used for up and down purposes.

I had a Sony cell phone with a jog dial. Didn't like the cell phone (battery hog, poor sound), but loved the jog dial. Very fast and intuitive.

Dan.

Wow.

I didn't expect this thread to have such a positive reaction to the Jog Dial.

Maybe Sony should throw away the rest of the camera and just place the CZ lens on a jog dial.

Give it Mac drivers, and we're set. ;-)))

Um, err.. patended ?

Jog dials / wheels are seen in Non-Sony electronic toys for several years...

But, they are a good feature for Sony (if good implemented (bad example: N*k*n CP950 - bad ergonomics, bad menus - good example: N*k*n CP990, just the opposite))

What's a CP950? And a CP990? What are those, Ivo? Huh? What are they?

That was pretty silly, but somehow I felt that I couldn't stop myself. I feel so aweful. :(

Bahahahahahahahah!!©

... and that's as bad as I try to allow myself to get.

... except for when I'm bugging Pondria about the Wega. (Pondria, you still never answered that question in my other thread. Are you at the store right now looking at something on the display stand?)

Oh,

sorry. The badwords*.

These two words induce a reaction of the human brain, resulting in a IQ degrade of 95.0% and 99.0%.

One can see this psychological effect on some other unnamed people in some other unnamed forums here.

I bought a Sony TRV-75 Hi-8 camcorder a couple of years ago when it was the hot ticket in video and it uses a jog-dial to access the menu selections. I really like the way it works, but then again, the menu system on my S70 works fine for me too. Even with the silly little hat switch that reminds me of the point-of-view hat switch on my sons Cyborg 3D joystick. ;-)

Have you looked at a Sony notebook lately? Right there on the bottom in the menu. Jog Dial

Yes...patented. Do a web search on the phrase "sony's pateneted jog wheel" and you'll se e that phrase used repeatedly on sony's own site, as well as others.

The jog / shuttle wheel as a hardware control has been around for some time. Sony applied it specifically as an navigation interface for LCD-based menus. And that is patentable...and has in fact been patented by Sony.
