I use a LowePro CompuTrekker AW for the following kit:
D100 w/ MB-D100
24-120 VR (attached)
50/1.8 D
70-300 ED
SB-800 (with SC-17)
F100 or F65 body
SB-50DX
There's also room to stick in little things you need.

The laptop compartment is also very handy for when I need to travel with fewer bags - although i try to avoid it because it only just fits my 15" notebook. Otherwise, I use it for paperwork when out in the field, because it keeps paper nice and flat.

If you don't need the notebook compartment, try the LowePro MiniTrekker AW - almost identical specs, and will easily handle your combination and then some.

Hey Thomas,I was using a basic shoulder bag, this was fine although the strap can slip off the shoulder, and I never put it down for fear of theft, but the camera and 1 lense stays in a topload AW.Today I bought a lowpro Rover AW II camera bacpack, the bottom half is a case setup similar to what I had and on top is a open pack for human things ,lotsa straps and the tripod is very well secured on the back in the center ! which sits in its own pouch , and the cam and 1 lense in the topload in front on the belt and another lens case on the other belt. This leaves the cam in instant reach and the weight is well balanced , also I dont need to leave a case anywhere, and both of my hands are free, nothings gunna fall, its just a bit backpackerish, but its all safe and my hand are FREE, to defend myself if ness, but its also good body laguage to show that eveythings secure and tight , a theif can grab a shoulder bag and run, if you hands are holding something. I'm gunna do some walking and use the tripod more. Guess it depends if you like to leave the body/lens or seperate them.If all of your gear is on the back in the pack its pretty heavy. Also had the Lowpro Trim Trekker this full is heavy.

One that I do like is the Lowpro Magnum AW shoulder bag,its beefy lookin and holds alot, the strap is greatly padded , it has detachtable bags on the sides and very well padded and a super solid base but looks like its holding something very very expensive good if there is a assitant to hold and luggage wise,it looks very tough, very very PRO/RAMBO looking.

Small is conveinient but secure is SAFE ! (I've had numerous theft attempts which only happens when I'm on my own - ,most of the time or when my dog cant be with me)I'm in Melbourne ,and its becoming anti- pitbull/staffy. WOOF

Dear folk,

Thanks for your precious sharing. I have a question regarding backpack or shoulder bag. Which one you prefer and why. I intend to use backpack which can evenly distribute loading to my body, but reporter style is easy to take things out.

Orion carries all (large hip bag),
Photorunner is small, used for one or two lens shoots
Tenba in between but can expand to carry all.

The two lowepros are hip and shoulder belted bags which I find most convienent.

Many out there to choose from.

Best place to compare is at a major photo convention around the country where all are there to fondle.

Know your measurements and what you plan to carry. An inch or two can make a big difference of how much you can carry at once.

Good luck,
Elliot

I have used so many it's pathetic....

Here is my current setup...

Lowepro S&F reporter 200
Lowepro S&F Lens cases 1W and 4
Lowepro S&F S&F bottle bag, and memory wallet
Lowepro S&F Pouch 60

This KIT allows me to carry the D1x with L-bracket attached, the SB800, 24-70mm f2.8, 17-35mm f2.8, 60mm f2.8, 80-200f2.8, 300mm f4, batteries, fileters, accessories, and a light meter. However IF I want to carry everything, it becomes a bit awkward.

So I also have a Lowepro Nature Trekker, and if I need to carry everything, I generally go with that.

Other bags I have include Photoflex Hip Bag (Galen), Tamrac backpack (still has my hassy in it) Pelican hard case (used for weddings/events along with soft bags), lowepro topload zoom (nice for sking), and the lowepro orion AW (hip bag that has a daypack on top).

I should likely sell some of this stuff!!!

The way I generally work is to put everything between the backpack, and the 200AW. Then I swap lens cases, lenses, and accessories as I go based on what I think I will be shooting. I leave the rest where ever, trunk, house, etc..

One reason I purchased the S&F system is I wanted a system, not one bag. I've discovered one bag is never going to be enough. It's either too big, or too small, or hard to carry loaded down. The S&F system is modular, and so one can add and subtract lens cases and pouches to meet the current shooting needs.

A big pack like the trekker is nice to have when you want to carry everything, but I've found that is rarely what I want to do. I sometimes regret leaving lenses behind, but more often, I take four lenses, and end up using two....

We carry a Lowepro mini trekker AW and a Lowepro micro trekker 100. Both are backpack style, which allows for free use of both hands without concern for a bag slipping off your shoulder. Excellent construction, and if you are an all day tourist/hiker, they will prove invaluable. With the mini trekker, there are a couple of good solid loops to carry a tripod; haven't been able to figure out the "official" tripod carrier that folds on the back. While the micro trekker is good for an slr body with a heavy lens (28-70 or 70-200vr) and a couple of primes, it doesn't have enough structure to easily sling a tripod. The mini trekker can handle a couple of bodies, several lenses, and the tripod. And of course, you can sling either one over one shoulder.

Are they ever?

I'm very happy with this pack. (coming from many other bags)

I've got a Domke F2 and love it. It's super robust and roomy, but not overly padded. It has a modular system of various removable compartments that can be placed within it as needed. It also has that old-school look about it that obscures the amount of money tied up in equipment inside it. And it only goes for around $100 these days!

Ive got the following in it right now with loads of room left:
D100
Nikon 50/1.8
Sigma 180/2.8
Recharger
Card Reader
Some Binoculars
Other small stuff
