Hey yall,

Just picked up an 880 and am thinking about getting a slave flash. I see that many of you have used the DSF-1s and 2000 models, but I have yet to see any comparisons or reviews (except Steve's). Does anyone have both... do they perform well?

I have the 3000, and have been pretty happy with it.

I have the 2000 & it works great with my CF 880.

I got the dsf-1s pretty cheap on ebay, and built my own tiny bracket. I am very happy with it, just using it as a bounce adds a lot to my pictures.

Well, I went through quite a bit of torment until I landed on what is clearly a nice solution--the DSF-1s. It has plenty of power, and has a switch to set the flash to trigger on either the first or second flash (the 880 flashes twice, and it's on the second that one wants the slave to go off!), which makes it usable with other "regular" flashes which go off only once. The 2000, by contrast, only triggers on the second flash, making it useless with other (e.g. non-digital) cameras with built-in (or external) flashes.

The DSF-S1 if really very, very, nice. (But beware, if it is set on a bracket, you will HAVE to isolate all the metal contacts on the flash from the metal of the bracket (with, say, electrical tape), otherwise the "slave" won't work. SR Electronics admits to this.

I hope this helps.

Robert,

Thanks for the Info... I will only use this flash with the 880, so I will most likely get the 2000 so that I can have adjustable intensities. Would insulation be a problem with the a "shoe" that is plastic you think? Is there any way to "divert" the camera's flash so that all the light is coming from the slave?
Thanks,
matthew

Matthew:

As regards a plastic shoe, please let me know if you can find one. I have looked everywhere. I also called SR Electronics, and they confirmed the problem, and admitted that they too use electrical tape to isolate the flash from the metal parts of any bracket/show.

One could construct a small diverter with, say, some thin cardboard to direct the camera falsh upward. It would look ugly and not be practical to put on and remove all the time, but I suppose it would be for occasional use anyway, no?

By the way, the DSF-S1 also has adustable power--three settings. But it is clearly less powerful than the 2000 (which which I am not familiar anyway, so I can't really comment on it per se). In any event, it certainly works nicely.

Good luck.

Robert
