Rainbow - What do you think

On the whole, compared to Philadelphia, I would much rather be
interested in the wonderful results you get so often, than whether
the angle of the dangle was correctly observed, or in correctness
discussed.

A lot of joy in your pictures, Rick, often. That's worth its
weight, and we will not say in what. No need.

Best,

It takes very large drops to make an intense rainbow. The drops
are almost visible in the jpeg.

Sorry about the accusation. It has nothing to do with the fact you
fudged a photo or two before as Narrbl suggested (I think fudging's
acceptable anyway). It's just that I was taught long ago to keep a
critical eye for alterations -- a habit I can't seem to break.

Stunning image.

Thanks for taking the time to ask.

Rick
but...

Is that an actual photo? It strikes me that the angles are wrong.
Where is the sun in the picture? It's hard to tell but my guess is
that it is to the right which would make the rainbow impossible.
There is typically only 2 degrees of separation between the red an
blue arcs. This one looks too large.

What do you think of the SD9's color rendition? Caught this off
the deck this morning. 80400 handheld.

Hi Rick,

Beautiful colours! And nice contrast to low contrast, gray and dull green lanscape.

Thanks for sharing,
Wojtek

Wonderful image- love the framing.

How do you like the 80-400 OS Rick?

I like to drive the west texas roads in my pickup and shoot wildlife out the window handheld- is it sharp at 400 like the other EX long zooms at 300?

Well, as I have said many times: It is equally as sharp as or sharper than my 70200 at f5.6/4.5 settings in over 50% of the shots I have compared. The most noticeable difference is contrast which is better on the 80400. This really surprised me. It is sharper than the 50500 which gave me some great shots. I can't compare it to the 100300 but I suspect the 100300 would be a little sharper. It would be nice if it was a constant f4.0 like the 100300 or had HSM but you can't have everything. It wouldn't surprise me (wild guess), if some of the problem was related to HSM implementation although some have speculated it was getting it to work on the Canon bodies.

I just bought the 1.4 t/c but haven't had the chance to try it yet. In summary, I really like it. I don't always get tack-sharp shots hand-holding at slower speeds, but if I keep shooting enough, I get the keeper I need.

Wouldn't it be nice if they put the OS in the camera?

Yeah buddy, that would be nice.

I think I'll save up and give it a whirl- I'm using a 70-300 Super II non APO and it's ok to 200 but then gets really soft- I'm putting it and an SA7, 28-80 APO kit on Ebay. Need to upgrade to some more EX glass. Hate to sell the SA7 cause it's so nimble- but I'm just not using it since I got the SD9.

Thanks for the reply-

I shot the 70300 APO for a little while and it was great at 70 and 100, OK at 200 but soft at 300 as you said. For the money it is a good lens and there are some photographers who do well with it. I would guess that some copies are better than others. I wasn't impressed with the macro but after shooting the 50 and 105, I doubt I would be impressed with any macro out of a zoom.
