i was ging to take my camera out today and shoot some amazing shots of a sunset over the lake, but I didn't. I pulled the camera out of the bag, turned it lovingly over and over, turned the switch on and off a couple of times, even reviewed a couple of the pics already on the CF card, and then regretfully put it back in the bag, and returned it to the top cupboard. I admit it, I was scared. Scared of the 10K shutter barrier. What if I get up to 9,999 and then have to choose between two vital shots on my last exposure? One might be Osama being captured in my local mall, while outside a stricken airliner sheds vital parts as it prepares to dive into a crowded neighbourhood. Which would you choose?

"Reeellaaaxxxx," I hear a few of you say, "the 10K shutter barrier doesn't exist." Well, how do you know? It might not exist for you, but it sure exists for me. It's driving me crazy, I lie awake at night after dreaming that I am using my 300D, only to be cheated by the cold reality of having woken up. Please, can someone help me! I really really want to use my 300D, and I know there must be a way...

Just use it. :)

Everything wears out. When she finally dies, get it repaired and calculate how many cents per shot it cost you (including shutter repair). Reflect deeply and ask yourself if your photography hobby is worth continuing. Reflect deeper and think back to when it cost money just to ever see the photos you just snapped. Seems like photography today costs less than ever before!

You might as well stay home, as the risk of getting mow down by an automobile exists every time you cross a street. Wait, there are tornados and typhoons that can hit your house while you are home. Did you check your stove to make sure it is not a fire hazard? Better check it again, as it has been 10 minutes already since your last inspection.

I am not trying to give you a hard time. However, if you are paranoid all the time, you can't get anything done...

Ok guys, here is what we have at the end, after talking so much about the shutter... A lot of paranoid people with perfectly working shutters, including myself :(

JohnDow,

First, calm down and use your camera as you wish. I personally use mine whenever I want, but I try to be within the limits of amateur use. This is, I do not switch the continuous mode much, do not shot everything I saw just because it is free.

On the other hand, the user profile on the forum is biased, most people find the forum just because their shutter failed (you may even assume that, most of the shutter failures get to this forum). So on the last 5 months I can say I have seen 20-30 shutter failures here. Canon sells 100.000s of this product. So, once more, calm down.

Finally, we recently had a shutter count record of 64.000 (posted on this forum), why don't you simply be the next :)

you really need to get a grip. You're right about one thing, nobody know if the 10K shutter barrier is a fact or not, but neither do you. There is nothing we can do about it so what are you asking help for? Do you want us to hold your camera for you so you don't reach the 10K limit? Do you want us to buy you a new camera? bottom line is.. everything is hardware and hardware will eventually go bad. Let's not start posts like this throwing more flame in the fire. The majority of the people are VERY well aware about peoples DR w/ defective shutter. Just be happy your shutter is still working and stop whining about something that hasn't happen yet.

lol.

This post by "JohnDoe" was a spoof making fun of 300D people who cry like babies and create reasons for "not" taking pictures and enjoying their wonderfull cameras.

Everyone fell for it.

HAHA!

Look, pal. I am the center of the world, and I just hit 10K. If something bad happens to me, then it's sure to happen to everyone else. Just sit tight, okay?

My hero! A brave person! I wish more people at these forums were astute enough to work out when people are being facetious... :-)

I had my shutter die around that number and i'm not worried in the least bit. Even if it breaks the camera is under warranty and if not it will only cost you $180 or so. If mine breaks again and i really need a camera or a new one is out I'll simply dust off the mastercard. Yeah, like my mastercard is dusty!

Warning: photographs steal your soul!

Just had the shutter changed after failing at the 5,000 exposures mark. -and it was 5,000 not 10,000!!!
I plan to drive the new shutter up to 50,000, so why worry?

I've read the other posts and know this is a gag to some degree...however it is an interesting concept. My camera may break so I won't use it. In that case it may as well be broken...what is the difference? It is like curing heart disease by removing the heart. You will never have a shutter problem if the camera sits.

After losing my first 300d to err 99 at 5800 pics, I can understand why some might be fearful. However it was replaced free by Sears and I have the 2 year replacement warranty and about 17,500 pics on my rebel and I do not worry in the least. I somehow misplaced one of my extra batteries for my camera, I think my dog got it :) and I sat around and worried about it for 5 minutes before I called Sterlingtek.com yesterday and ordered 2 more with an extra charger because I want my battery grip to be full as I head for 18k pictures. I am not worried in the least about my camera breaking as its only 5 months old now and at least 18 months warranty left. I think you did get a lot of people going with your post...LOL
