I have had my D70 for about a month but as I have only a 6 year old desk top with 500mhz chip and maximum RAM capacity of 512mb and 8gb hard disk i have not really beem able to use PS CS to its full advantage.
Nor have i been able to really process NEF files.

So my aim is to keep the desktop for internet and Excel/Word work and buy a Notebook for my photowork. I am looking at an Acer Aspire 1511 as it is a good price with a 3000mhz chip and max RAM support of 2GB.

My question is has anybody got experience of using notebooks as a main photo editing machne and are notebooks up to the task??

Just go for one of the new intel centrino notebooks.. their battery life is outstanding !! choose a Centrino 1.5 or 1.7, they have the power of a 2.2 or 2.6 GHz desktop ! --> more than enough for editing pictures.

Apple iBooks G4 or Powerbooks are good for that job too

Just make sure it has as fast a processor as you can afford...since you're buying new, go with the latest, nothing under 3ghz. And then LOAD it with RAM. 1gb minimum. A 15.4" screen is good, 17" is better.

If you go the Mac route, get the latest Powerbook 17".

All these have a big price tag, the Mac is close to $3g's. At the bare minimum, 3ghz processor, 1gb RAM.

If you want to buy a notebook for still photos only, you can go with anything between 2ghz to 3ghz. If you plan to do video editing in the near future, I would recommend the highest ghz you can find.

If I were in your place I would buy a 2.6 to 3ghz laptop with a minimum of 512mb of ram. This should last you a couple of years.

If you are not a gamer and don't plan on playing games then don't waste your money on a laptop that comes with the most expensive video card out there.

Lastly, when it comes to processing power on laptops please keep in mind that on certain tasks the hard drive speed plays a major role compared to gigahertz. In fact hard drive rotation speed is a crucial factor. Make sure you buy a laptop with a 5400rpm hard drive and nothing less. This will help you a lot.

The best laptop out there is an IBM but it is very expensive. I have a dell and they are fine too. Recently, alienware is taking the lead in terms of power.
