as a lurker who's currently saving up to get his drebel (half way there!) I'm wondering at what shooting mode most people shoot at. I've had a chance three times to use the drebel at either a compusa or a circuit city (still need to get around to driving to a bigger photo place) and both times I shot mostly with the basic modes and no flash mode.

From reading the posts on this forum, it seems that a lot of people are using the creative modes more then the basic, am I right in saying that?

I also realize that it might be depended on what your shooting...so if you want to give examples of what your shooting and the mode you use that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I predominantly use Av mode, M and sometimes Tv.

I can count on two hands the number of times I've used any of the Automatic modes.

Generally, it works fine in the automatic modes, but as you get more comfortable with the camera and yourself, you may want to move towards the creative zones, as these give you more control and let you make the majority of the decisions.

I don't trust the camera to make it's own recomendations on shutter speed or aperature for me. I spend most of my time in Av so I can control my DOF and my clarity. I don't have L-glass and most of my lenses just don't perform optimally wide open, so I like to stop them down at least 1 stop for most shots unless I absolutely need the extra shutter speed.

I am curious about the benefits of M - I use the P-program most of the time and find the automatic adjustment of aperature and shutter speed very nice and still providing full control.

But about M: How do you experience the special M centerweighted metering mode?? Is it much different from the evaluative metering, which I generally use in the P-mode though once in a while going to the partial.

How can you tell the effect of the special M-metering?

I use TV, AV, or M

I always set to auto box when I turn the camera off. My wife does not want to learn all the other modes. She has been very loving during my transformation for P&S to DSLR.

The reason why I have gravitated towards M is because I try to get exposure spot on. I got tired of being in one of the auto, non-M modes and

1. Take a shot and look at the histogram.
2. See that exposure is off and adjust exposure compensation
3. Raise the camera back to my eye (but framed slightly differently)
4. Takes another shot and look at the histogram

5. See that the exposure is off, but different because the 2nd shot was framed slightly different. Adjust exposure compensation again anyway
6. Raise the camera back to my eye (but framed slightly differently)
7. Go to step 1. Repeat until I go batty and give up.

I haven't compared metering modes because the above is the most important to me. M mode lets me hold on to my sanity a little bit longer.

Most of the time, anyway. If you need to change the aperture or speed, you can do so with the wheel while still in P mode.

However, other modes are useful when you know for a fact what you want. But, I find that shooting in P mode, half-pressing to see what the camera thiks is good, then adjusting the settings with the wheel to suit my tastes is usually the best way to go.

But, be aware that the metering is different in each of the modes -- that can be an important consideration when choosing.

300D -- awesome, but needs some major improvements! : )

When I first got the camera I used P a lot, but nowadays I use AV, TV, and M most of the time and almost equally, depending on the situation. I find A-DEP to be a waste of dial space. (Maybe Canon should replace A-DEP with an A-ISO?)

wonder if Canon will give me a refund and take away the other functions cuz i don't want them.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the responses.

When I was testing the camera out, I was using the portrait mode a lot with the kit lense and it seem to take some good shots (for horrible lighting inside the stores). I did find that the flash didn't help very well in the store...

I did get some shots I though were good of my daughter (who was sleeping at the time), although I had to use no-flash and I did a little post-op work to fix the light level. Let me know what you think for test shot of the camera:

That is a good question. I've been looking at a lot of airshow pictures and I see alot of them use Av mode a lot. I'm not sure why either....so it would be good to get an explanation why Av mode is used in high speed situtations.

Anyone who knows about photography will shoot on manual, AV, or TV or sports mode for AI servo , DEPENDING on the situation. For example, Tv mode if you want a certain shutter speed for a fast moving object, AV for perhaps a fill flash portrait, sports mode for tracking and AI servo, etc.

If you are asking, "can I just use this camera as a point and shoot" my answer would be a resounding NO. This is not that type of camera and you'd get better results from the canon 8MP powershot if that is your type of photography. If you want to learn about the way this camera works, head to this website:

Don't worry about the onboard flash...you can't even use it with most lenses that you will purchase for the 300D. (big zoom lenses need a larger flash unit).
