I have heard many people say they do not like the white paint on the longer canon L lenses because it makes the lens more consipicuous. I am curious to know everyone's opinions on this and any experiences anyone can share.

I agree I think the white paint is horrible. Also it a very wierd white go and try to find some touch up paint for it it's impossible unless you have a body shop mix some up for you.

if your walking around with a canon supertele photo, it doesnt matter what color it is, its going to get you noticed.

just my smaller lens and 1D make people ask what magazine im with, how do you think people react when I have a lens thats weight 8lbs and thats about 2 feet long with a front element the size of a diner plate ?

You could paint it black or white or green etc and it would still get tons of attention whereever you go.

Ive had some big black sigma's such as the 120-300 and 50-500 and trust me, they arent discrete either

But at least BLACK matches the bodies.

I have a Bigma (my first BIG lens) and have been surprised at the endless comments I get.

I don't think white would make any difference

I personally like the white. It is what makes the Canon L a Canon L. Last week I saw a guy with the BIGMA and right away said "So your a Canon Guy" (he was a Nikon guy). Then we started talking.

I think the white color makes the lense unique and gives Canon its own identity. Part of me says, "I spent a lot for this lense, I dont mind showing it off once in awhile...." Not that Im in this for status, but people, after seeing my lense, will know Im serious about photography and only use the best. Plus it starts off conversation, I love speaking with people further into the art of photography.

I like the white IMO.

I dont really mind the white color, but from what I hear its nice when its hot outside. A black lens can get really warm eventually expending from the heat, making the lens less accurate. I have not yet been in any situation where this has been a problem though.

However, a white big lens like the 70-200mm has made my photography more social. It seems people believe you are a professional with this lens, and on my first weekend with it, there were many people wanting to stop and talk about photography.

At first I was a bit uncertain, but since I live in an area with little crime I know I can relax. If you are not, I guess it can easily attract unwanted attention from thieves who see they can make a quick buck. I guess when I am in places like that, I want to travel with someone to feel more secure.

Onehawkeye,

What I have read is that the white keeps the lens and optics cooler than a black lens, thus offering greater heat protection for these beauties.

I've never been bothered. I think it's silly to worry about the color of a lens. As long as it takes sharp pictures thats all that should matter. It does make it easy to spot the Canon guy's at events.

i have that lens on my silver Rebel with the lens hood attached. I was shooting at the airport and many people was looking at me distance. Even a man and his wife came to me and asked me: 'how many kilometers??!!'

i said: 'its JUST a normal 24-70mm lens, not a telephoto lens!'

think about this story, its just a black medium/heavy big lens!!!

PS me too, i am surprised of the size of this cute bulldog!

I try to convince myself that I'm prepared for it to be huge, but I'm not sure! Well, it MUST be smaller than my Sigma 100-300 f/4! Mustn't it?

So I am glad it is built tough and looks like it is going to last.

It's the toughest looking lens I have. I'm sure it will perform like it looks years from now.

the 24-70mm L (with the hood attached) is like a cute bulldog!
