I've had my E-10 for 5 months and have had no problems connecting to any Mac in my photo studio. Now I've added an IBM T20 Think Pad (Win 98) for home use (NEW BABY!) and cannot get the computer to see the E-10. Neither the 32mb Smart Card nor the 340mb microdrive.

When running the New Hardware Wizard the E-10 isn't even found nine times out of ten. When given the option to install manually the process goes fine and I install the file from the IBM provided installation diskette. What baffles is that even the Olympus provided Smart Card is not seen.

HELP! my new baby is getting older by the minute.

Rl, Im running the 770z Think Pad no issues, I assume your looking under the My computer Icon for the new drive to show up?

I rarely use the usb cable but when I do its like this,

Plug the USB cable into hub and camera
Turn the knob to the little green jagged line
Turn the camera on!
BAM!

A new drive pops up in the "MY Computer" group window, or under explorer whichever route you like.

Hope that helps, if not call me you only a few miles away :-)

Brian,

Other than the fact that I'm not using a hub, my connection procedure is as yours but, no "bam".

Just grasping at straws, but figured you won't mind the extra ideas....

Bad port? Have another USB device to try on the port? Also, it might be possible that the port is disabled. In addition to Windows, check in the utility that IBM installs (or, at least used to) -- there might be a an option to disable in there.

Thanks Jace but no, I use that port for a zip drive with no problems.

RLNYC:

I can't offer a solution to your USB problem but I also use a Thinkpad 770Z and download all my pics using a PCMCIA adapter for the CF card. Just popping the card in the computer and putting the new one in the camera, I can perform my download whenever I want. Just remember to put the card in before you boot and remove it after shutdown.

I would get Win2k Professional and put it on the laptop. You'll see much greater stability (I've never had a problem since I loaded it a year ago), and alot better USB support than W98. Power management is also much better under W2k. Performance seems equivalent if not better since it hasn't crashed!

Thats a great idea if one wants to upgrade their whole system. I use W2K and its wonderful, but I think what we really need here is why its not working under W98.

RL, can you look in device manager and see if you have any USB devices with the yellow exclamation point on them? If you do remove them, and then retry the procedure for conencting the E-10
