Greetings everyone:

I was wondering if anyone would know if by this fall will Canon have a new DSLR camera on the market.

My speculation is that they will announce one at Photokina. Even if they do, it may not be "on the market" much before Christmas, and may be hard to get this year. Of course, if it is already in production .... .

The real question is "what" their next move will be. Could be:

o A DR/300D replacement, perhaps black and less "dumbed down" vs. the 10D to compete with the new Nikon D70

o An improved 10D (it is getting a bit "long in the tooth" in digicam terms)

o Something positioned above the 10D (e.g., an entry-level model with a full 35 mm focal plane).

Likely no way to know until they announce -- and if at Photkina that will not be until the first week of October.

Canon doesn't announce what they're going to announce before announcing it, so anybody who "knows" isn't supposed to be telling us. So there's just speculation.

The only thing that really jumps out at me is that "high-end" digicams have hit 8MP recently, while the low-end DSLRs (300D and 10D) are both 6MP, so it seems like the laws of marketing (which have little to do with reason) would dictate that the low-end DSLRs will have to make the jump to 8MP.

Does the 10D need to be replaced so soon? To me Canon seems to stick with the cameras that work for a couple of years at least, but with the new Fuji S3 and a Nikon D100 replacement on its way who knows. My bet will be a new 1DS maybe with the 14mp CMOS from the Kodak in it.

Europe largest photo magazine, Chasseur d'Images calls for a 8 MP to be announced early next fall that will replace the first generation D300.

It will kick the D70 of its pedestal and regain the title.

So, if your looking to buy a new DSLR, be patient, wait 3 three more months. You will then own the best entry level DLSR, ( for a projected 3 to 4 months until Minolta brings it DSLR...).

The 10D replaced the D60 after 12 months, and the D60 replaced the D30 after 21 months. The 10D is now 16 months old.

The 1D wasn't replaced until it was about 31 months old, and the 1Ds is about 21 months old now.
My bet will be a new 1DS maybe with the 14mp CMOS from

I think a 10D replacement is most likely. A new 1Ds maybe early next year, and I strongly doubt it will use anything but a Canon CMOS.

I was told by a Ritz guy that the next will be a 13MP full frame sensor. Sounds expensive. Do I beleive him... not sure but thought I would throw it out there for you.

Cheers,

Put it this way - a full frame CMOS is EXPENSIVE. The cost of making a full frame CMOS is a large part of the 1Ds' production costs. Canon (hopefully) would not release a camera that includes a full frame sensor with crappy features. Full frame = pro. An amateur does not financially need a 1Ds. There is no reason to release a full frame sensor not in a 1Ds body.

My guess if they do announce anything would be an upped 10D or 300D. This way it will be able to compete with the D70.

What MP count will it be? Definitely 8MP. Why? They already have a bargain barrel and a not so bargain barrel 6MP cameras in the 300D and 10D, respectively. The 8MP CMOS is proven in the 1D Mark II, so therefore they just need to backtrack it into the 300D or 10D.

They may need a new body though since the 1D Mark II sensor is bigger slightly. Personally I'd like to see what Canon could do by making a digital only body. Right now all their digital cameras are designed from the film bodies. But all we can do is wait and see.

If Ritz says it will happen, we now know what will not happen. That's like getting HDTV advice from a Radio Shack salesman.

Spoke to a canon rep at the annual K&S exhibit and when asked about a new 10D, he smiled and said, "all I can say it there will be nothing released in the next 2 months". (meaning something MAY be released in 3 months...this fall).

lol, thats funny. I must say though this was the best ritz guy I've seen. he was a real photographer at least... but I'm not holding my breath.
