Hi

After much deliberation I have halfed jumped ship and got myself a lovely little 12"ibook to accompany my canonG5. Sorry but I still use a desktop PC ( paint shop pro) and am having trouble opening images on the PC that have been edited on the mac ( photostudio 5 which came bundled with the G5 and is also installed on the PC).

If I burn them onto CD there is not so much of a problem but if I try transferring them using a card reader and CF card it's hopeless, I'm saving them as tifs or jpegs so I can't see what the problem is, any ideas ?

Related question: when I click the 'get info' in finder any image that has been edited and saved is only displayed as a 'photostudio document' so I cannot tell what formatt they have been saved as. Is this just a trait of photostudio or is there a way around this that I am missing?

I guess I should just go and buy PSE to install on both do you think this will solve my problems?

Advice would be much appreciated
Thanks
Marc

historically, Mac's didn't use file extensions on thier filenames. This created a problem with using the files on windows machines because windows depends on the extension (.tif, .jpg, .pdf, etc) to tell it what file format you've got. Many Mac programs don't save images with the extension unless you manually type in the proper extension on the filename when you save. Try this...take a file you're having trouble with, and rename it with the proper extension (make sure you remember what format you saved it in..wrong extension will give problems too) and see if that fixes it.

Ahh, I see the light!

Thanks Chris, that makes sense.

I'll have to make some guesses based on file sizes as to what format I saved in for the old images. But I'll make sure I add the extentions manually from now on!

Thanks again

I'm pretty sure that somewhere in System Prefs is an item to display file extensions. I can't remember where it is in Panther since I'm in front of Jaguar right now, but take a good look through and you'll probably find it.

display file extensions.
In Finder: Preferences-> Advanced-> show all extensions

In some programs there is an option in the File Save dialog to attach the proper extension automatically. See if your application's Save dialog has it.

Also,

you should be able to open the pictures on the PC by first starting the PC application and then choose "open" from the applications file menu.

Just FYI, PSE 2.0 seems to be bundled with just about everything nowadays - I received one copy with my 10D, another the other day when I bought a Wacom Graphire 3 (4x5) tablet. Bottom line, if you plan to buy a graphics tablet, you get the tablet + PSE for less than PSE alone!

Thanks for the help everybody. I think I've got the file exchange sussed now. Sorry I haven't responded sooner but I keep being refused access, dodgy connection or isp or something.

I was thinking of going with the macalley icecad tablet as it's 1/3 price of wacom graphire but as you have pointed out it's probably worth paying the extra to get PSE and the rest of the software bundle that comes with the graphire studio (£99 here in UK).

Does anybody have any opinions In terms of performance and user friendlyness is there much between the icecad and graphire? I get by with a mouse at the mo so I guess either would be a huge improvement !

Thanx

I don't have either, but have been thinking about a tablet for a while - though the iceCAD tablet looks tempting, the active area is only 2.85” x 2.14”!! That seems really small as a working space to me, when teh Graphire starts at 4x5.

I think I'll be saving to someday buy the new Wacom tablet & screen, that looks the best thing ever for working on photos. I've seen it in action and it's really nice.
