New to d-photography. Would like to be able to store original photos, with album type organization, onto CD-RW with my CD recorder. "Adobe Photo Share", which came with my camera (oly-2100UZ) does not allow me to do this. Is this even possible? If so, how? And is there an album type program I should use? Thanks...Jim (frustrated)

Try some of the freeware sites like nonags.com and you'll find some album-type software that you can try out. Maybe you'll find a program suitable but you might also learn what you like and dislike without spending your cash. I seem to remember a program called "my Album" or something really simple that had most of the features you'd find on pay programs.

I can't recommend anything but this may get you started.

Jim;

I use a program called "FotoAlbum" from the Fototime web site. The address is http://www.fototime.com/ . This program will allow you to define exactly which directories and subdirectories to include in your "FotoAlbum". The program has many useful features such as efortless slideshows, you can post your pictures on their web site for all to see, and many others. What I use it for is to create a photo CD image that will produce an autorun CD that will display all of the included photos in thumbnail form. It allows the user to view the pictures individually or start a slide show. The program is "free" and I have found it to be invaluable for creating photo CD's that I can share with anyone. It doesn't burn the CD but it creates the image that can be copied to the CD with your burner. I recommend it highly.

I think one type to avoid is one that runs based JavaScript/Applet. As I understand, Java security forces the script/applet to keep its temp files on the same drive it is on. Since it can't write to the CD, it won't work.

Ran into that problem with PixMaker (panorama program). Works just fine on the web and off a regular hard drive, but not off a CD-ROM.

Another point to think about may be "long term archiving". If you burn your images in a special format (e.g. album type) you'll probably get into trouble later. (If a new version of your program can't read the old versions, or you would like to change your program).

I personaly prefer to store my original images in "plain" .jpg format to avoid this problem (of course nobody can assure that .jpg will be readable in 10 years, but I think it's still the safer choice).

There are a lot of programs for organising such image collections (IMHO Cumulus from http://www.canto.com is one of the best solutions). Cumulus support categories, notes, user defined fields, EXIF, other media formats and and and) -> Try a search for cumulus in this forum.

I use PhotoRecall Deluxe (www.photorecall.com) .... it uses MS Access as its database engine and has a lot of options .... for example....when I archive to CD, I copy all of the source images to the cd, and then have the'master album' just store the thumbnails.....that way, I have the native JPG files and also the album indexing/sorting/searching capabilities. PhotoRecall also has an option to store the pictures inside the database.

Andreas;

Fototime does nothing to alter your images in any way shape or fashion. It simply puts a copy of itself on the CD image. Your images are stored in whatever format they were originally. It just helps organize your photo's and makes it easy for anyone with a PC and a CDROM drive to view your images. No risk whatsoever. And it's free.

I just file all my photos by month and drag-and-drop the original jpegs to the appropriate folder on the CD-R. It's quite easy to browse the CD with ACDC or Paintshop Pro. I'm not real sure why you'd need any "album" software.
