When I decided on my purchase, there was much mention about the BSS feature of the 950, 800 and 700.

The funny thing is I have never come across anybody posting anything about it or used this feature in their photos, lest seen any photos that mentioned BSS was used.

Am I the only one using it? I found it most helpful when taking handheld pictures in low light conditions where I didn't want to use flash.

I ALWAYS use it. (which means about 92.5% of the time). The only time I don't is when I'm in automatic mode for a quick pic needing flash, etc.... to save batteries... or to get a faster response time when working with a fast action subject with a high quality setting... or intentionally using 'continuous' shooting.

I think it's a great feature. You're right, I don't hear too much about it.

I have used this feature in action shots in a marine trip last week, took great photos from swimming dolphins, just have to set the resolution to XGA normal in order to take rather quick photos.

Umm, Jeff is that statistic real or what ?? :)

Glad to know somebody else uses it. The thing about using it in low light situations is the object has to be still and not moving. Else...

Damn. I had forgotten this feature. But after reading this post I decided to do some testing, and the results were a nice surprise: you can really get perfectly sharp handheld pictures with shutter speeds as low as 1/4 s. There were a couple of low light, hand held pictures I have taken that came out shaky, and would have immensely benefited from the use of BSS. Bet I'll never forget about this feature again...

Why not use continuous in this situation?

Two schools of fish on this idea. By leaving BSS on you only access it if you keep your finger on the button, otherwise, the first shot is saved. But if, as you point out, you are shooting smaller than full size, there may be value in shooting lots of exposures hoping for the one that isn't neccessarily the sharpest, but which has dynamics, composition, movement and vibrancy as its compelling quality.

Smaller shots shoot sequences faster than the full size full quality ones, too.

And howcome there are fish and mammals both named "dolphins"?

If you shoot a lot of BSS (there's no BS in BSS) you may find the occasional image that was made with a smear while you SAW a better sharper one on the viewfinder, you just know you did! Some shots with movement actually create lines out of detail thus generating edges the algorithm thinks are object contours. Maybe the 1000 will have BBSS (Better...).

Yup, I too had the opportunity to get handheld shots at shutter speeds as low as 1 s !!! Unbelievable but true. I believe that's definitely a very slight blur when you zoom in high but hey, in 1 sec lots of other things can happen :)
