... to hook to the 990 ? Mine is hooked to the camera strap but it cant be the best place. Manual shows no attachment to camera.

Thanks

Some loop the cord between the two sections of the camera. (My preference). Some drill a hole in the sync port cap and push the cord through and knot it. Some just trap the cord under the sycn port cap and screw it in.

I have been experimenting with little velcro patchs on the underside of the lens section, but nothing seems very good so far. HTH. PatiO.

I untied the string, slid it through the same place that the strap goes through...not a great solution but it works.

I have placed the cord loop under the rubber cap for the DCIN port and it holds it nicely with no modification required.

I let about 3/4" hang down inside battery compartment and close the lid.

no problems in 9 months of use. Of course I had the foresight to buy an extra lens cap, knowing that if I had a spare I'd never lose the original.

A good solution and a good laugh. Thanks, PatiO.

Such a simple thing, you would think. I was pleasantly surprised when Nikon solved the idea for the 990 by providing a loop of cord with just the right size and material to fit between the two body parts.

Some folks still have a problem with this slipping out. I don't. The reason is that I never let a lens cap flop around. A good habit to cultivate is to grab the cap with the curled fingers of your right hand so it can never blow or dangle in front of the lens. Now virtually all opportunity to have it drop from the camera is eliminated.

And, of course, when it's on the lens, it's going nowhere, too.

But that mid-swivel loop works the best. Tie a knot in it about an inch up from the cap and it can't get out.

To keep the cap from blowing in the wind while you are shooting and it is off the lens, stick a 1/2" square patch of velcro on the underside of the lens section of your camera and a matching patch on the cap. Then just remove the cap from the lens and stick it to the camera out of the way. And the cord, looped between the two sections will act as a backup in case it gets dislodged. All's well in this great nation of Yankee inventers... PatiO.

I think the best solution and the neatest is tapping a small hole in the flash sync cover and put a piece of string with a not through it. It holds perfect and is never in the way. I have been doing it since the first day I got my camera last year. I bought matching color piece of string and it looks very proffesional.

I see it but doesn't it put two thicknesses of cord into the swivel gap? If they bind, it will have to be adjusted more. I tried it with Nikon's own cord and it wasn't very free.

PERFECT solution. I tried just what you said and that cap isn't going anywhere. Just got your ebook the other day and after some of the great tips I've already seen in there, I'm convinced you're the Coolpix Master.

Thanks!

p.s. speaking of straps, I just got me a wrist lanyard for the 990. The same kind you use for underwater flashlights (and underwater cameras for that matter). Works great for the 990. Now I just got to find a better colour than the hot pink one that a local dive shop had. (only colour available). I've seen other people wondering about how to use rig up wrist straps for the 990 (and 950 for that matter), and was surprised no one suggested that.

Anyhow, I digress....

Cool. A wrist strap made for underwater lights. I knew somebody somewhere had to have the perfect solution. Can you get a picture of it? Is it one of those big-loop/small-loop configurations?

It's rumored that the next Nikon* is going to come in all those iMac colors and patterns but with dayglow magnesium. Perhaps there will be a future for the dive model...

Or maybe somebody has a strap for terrestrial flashlights.

You got it. Try this:

Now picture a black string with a hot pink rubber section, and you've got "celly's hot pink laynard".

It threads perfectly into the slot for the neckstrap that Nikon includes. (Waste of material).

I knew all my dive training would come in handy some day when I left my home of 3 1/2 years (Bermuda) for landlocked Alberta (Canada).

Nikon has always been pretty low key with their products. I think adding purple to some 990's was pushing it. ;-)

Ya never know....
