I am strongly considering buying the S10.

However, I have read some reviews that mention that the quality of the images taken indoors are dark and the image colors are not true.

I will be using the camera exclusively indoors. I will be using it for business taking pictures of women's shoes. I wil either e-mail the picture or put into a catelogue.

I really need some input on this camera. I travel all the time and really like the size, smart media, and the USB transfer,

Please advise.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

Set the S-10 on daylight color balance and shoot all the shoes you want in great color. I have a 48 megabyte flash card and in the next least compression I get 71 pictures on it. Don,t hesitate to purchase the S-10. I even have an external flash on mine for shooting distances in excess of 10 feet.

As long as you are setting up the shots, using a flash (the flash on the camera is only god for about 6 feet), and holding the camera very still (tripod - maybe) you will get excellent shots.

In its best mode the S10 generates image file sizes of about 1.3 Mbyte which can be a little unwieldy for email or Web catalogs (but excellent for photo quality images). If you do not want that large a file size and do not need the super high quality, I would suggest saving some money and buying a lower end camera.

Never saw a comment on the Fuji 1700 on this forum, but as far as I know, it has a better reputation for flash color accuracy than the S10. It is also very small with ample zooming.

I needed 2.1 Mpix, I thought. Catalogs might require this resolution, otherwise the 1700 might be an excellent choice. Please check the reviews/forum yourself.

Another choice might be the Epson 850, reputed for its color accuracy. And at this forum for its rapid firmware updates...

Another option is to wait just a few months more. If you don't want to wait, the Fuji is cheaper and will always be an excellent 2nd cam, ideal for web postings.

If indoor flash shots are you primary concern, then there are other better choices than the S10. I have an S10, but prefer the color saturation and indoor flash capabilities and light metering of the Coolpix 800, which I returned because it failed to take (very) low-light shots. Although it's not USB-enabled, you can pick up a Sandisk USB card reader for less than $50. Also, Nikon just lowered the price of the CP 800, which can be had for less than $550.

I'm sorry, but I'm not speaking from direct experience here.

But I've heard that you can use the camera sans pre-flash, if you change a setting on the camera after setting an exposure. Which would allow you to use a wireless slave. If you bothered to go through all that trouble. I certainly would. Perhaps there's a better way?

Nelson,

By using a "SRelectronics.com" digislave external flash trip. It senses the first flash and ignors it. Then it fires the external flash on the second (picture taking flash). I set the the canon S-10 for one or two stops darker and let the external flash become the primary light source. By adjusting the external flashes out put in the automatic mode it works for most distances. It gives me a much better light then the small on camera flash.

Jere,

I haven't tested this out yet, but I have a relatively cheap Sunpak external flash. It has a button where when depressed tests the flash(or trips it). Couldn't you set the S10 to no flash in dark indoors and use this function on the external flash. Press shutter and the flash test button simultaniously. I'll have to see if it works.

Actually, that's not a bad idea for stationary subjects.

By using a conventional slave flash (or the SR electronics flash set to fire on the first flash) you should actually get a proper exposure.
1. Push shutter button halfway.

2. Activate autoexposure lock with Set button - internal flash and external flash both fire so metering is correct.

3. Wait for external flash to cycle if necessary and press shutter button the rest of the way. Both flashes fire again.

I asked SR about the possibility of a slave flash that fires on both flashes (the ideal solution, I think) -

They suggested using two slaves, one set for the 1st flash and the other set for the 2nd...

I don't think their flashes cycle fast enough to fire on both flashes from the camera.

Jere,
You say "most distances" and "distances in excess of 10 feet"...

Do you mean you have to get beyond the normal flash range to take shots without overexposing? How close can you get with the SR flash?

Richard,

Anything closer then 6 feet I just use the camera flash. I haven't had the time to experiment in the closer ranges. My external flash is pretty powerful and I really try to power it down in the automatic mode. Example; Setting the ISO at the highest possible setting and the flash at a F-2.8.

Steve-

I am a previous owner of the Olympus C-2000Z. It has the greatest flash! One can assume that the C2020Z has the same quality. The size is much larger than the S10, and uses SmartMedia. Pick your pain.

Richard,

Very interesting thoughts, I will try it out to night and see what works.
Thanks for the reply.

Richard,

I just experimented with the S-10 and your correct. The camera fires the initial flash when the shutter is pressed half way down and the set button is pressed, then when the shutter is pressed all the way down the second flash fires and allowing for a second or two for the external flash to recycle between a full shutter button stroke. This has some exciting posibilities for studio or still life shots. Thanks for the idea, It would never occured to me. I'll let you know how it works when I try it out this evening.
