With the new arrival of the DSC S75 I wonder if the 'new' S75 firmware can be used for the S70.

Can it be done at all?

If so, how to get the firmware, how do upload it to my S70, what are the risks etc.

Regards,--Kees Mulder

Kees -

"Could" they do it? Perhaps. But you should know that there are several hardware differences in the S75, and the firmware is closely linked to those. To get the firmware to work for the S70 would require re-engineering of the code or at least some adjustments made to the S70 hardware.

So "would" Sony do this? I wouldn't hold my breath.

Answer to your question: There are no risks as you can't do upload any firmware to this camera. Sony would rather you purchase the S75.

Sony´s upgrade policy: Upgrade ? No problem, just purchase our new software (bundled with hardware called DSC-S75)...

a bit cynic today,

Is this also true with the S75? The firmware is not upgradable??

Actually I would have excpected that . Just like the Nikon, Kodak, etc. provide updates and improvements to their firmware.

Especially since Phil's reviews showed that a later version improved the performance of the camera.

Sebastian -

To my knowledge, Sony cameras have never been "user" upgradeable.

Remember, Phil received a second camera in his review. Apparently, this was a version that had been tweaked or adjusted by technicians so that he could continue the review and post new and more accurate comparison photos so that we'd know what to expect for a production model.

The upside with this is that Sony firmware "usually" works right the first time, often not needing updates for actual "bugs". The F505V occurence of BOCS was a real bug and was a real fluke in Sony history.

Sony comes out with a good firmware upgrade about once a year, and to make it easy portable, they wrap it in a new camera, providing them also with the space to put some colourful stickers on it explaining some features of the upgrade :)

Thank you all for the answers.

It is clear, to get new firmware, buy a new camara.

I'll see if I can get in contact with Sony RD and get them to answer on this firmware issue. If so,

I'll be Back.
