I also posted this over at the other forum, so I apologize to those that look at both, but I wanted to show my D70 friends how things were coming with the new D2H.

Weren't many duckies flying today, but I got this one of a female mallard. Taken with the D2H / 70-200VR + TC-20EII.

The quality of the image is okay, but the duck is a little off center.

See what happens when you post a D2H image on the D70 forum!

Seriously Frank, that's an outstanding picture. What do you like about the D2H that made you buy it?

Its good, but looks like you used a little too much noise reduction to me. A little too smooth. I hope that makes sense. Great job capturing it though. I'm still stuggling with catching in-flight stuff.

The main thing that convinced me was the improved AF capabilities, and so far, I'm not using them (I tried, but still have a bunch to learn). The other factors were the faster speed, more rugged construction (I shot > 8K pics with my D70 in 6 weeks), and reputedly better quality images.

The speed is undeniable. It's built like a tank. I'm not worried that I'll wear out the shutter in 9 months. Surprisingly, the pics do look better. I was pretty happy with the quality of the shots out of the D70. Not sure if it's worth 3X yet though.

One feature that I really like is the focus sensor display in the LCD. It shows which of the 11 sendors was active, and shows where the target was in relation to the sensor. I really like that.

Thanks for the feedback.

....right on the head again . This isn't the first time you've made such an astute comment either....;-)

I reposted in the other forum with no NR. Here's the re-processed pic (no NR).

What do you think?

Thanks,

The D2H is real nice, and I like it, but what I really need is that 300mm f/2.8. All I have to do now is convice the wifey....LOL

You might want to look at the re-post to Yves. I think it's even better (no NR in the repost - looks less smeared).

Thanks again for your comments.

Now I suppose you're trying to think of a way to repay me - like - maybe you could loan me your D2H for the summer so I could try it out - yeah, that would work.

Hmm, I think maybe my medication is wearing off, don't you?

Well, so far I have. If my wife lets me, I'm keeping it....;-) I got her to do some shooting on Sunday and she did real well. Here's hoping.

Jim Fenton Here....

I am seriously thinking of selling my 70-200VR simply because of the lack of reach for birds.

Do you have any experience with the 80-400 VR?

Ron Reznick early on reviewed it in a positive manner. Her personally tried to disuade me from selling the 70-200 and switching to the 80-400 recently.

Can anyone comment?

Thanks,

Jim

My opinion is that the 80-400VR is probably a good lens for stationary subjects, but not flying birds if that's what you are trying to shoot. I've seen some good shots with it, but it really isn't fast enough IMO to catch moving subjects.

It's f/4.5 at the short end and f/5.6 at the long end. It might do OK, but I have my doubts based on what little experience I have shooting the birdies. I might sell my 70-200VR, but only if I get the 300 2.8, and even then only after I'm sure that I won't need it on a regular basis. It's just too good a lens to give up on. Does have reach problems though for my kind of shooting.

Hope this helps.

Incredible picture - fantastic colours and focus.

But there's something funny going on round the bird itself - particularly above the head and behind the tail and [white feathers of the] wings. (latter could be motion I guess) The whole background has a very unnatural look it doesn't seem to get more in focus at the bottom of the picture as would be expected. For me it gives a slightly doctored feel to the whole picture.

Were you tracking the bird, or just such a fast shutter speed that a still camera caught it this well? I only ask becauase I would expect more horizontal blur of the background if it was the former.

I'm a complete amateur (an could only dream of taking pictures this good)so please take these comments as such... :-)
