It has been a really impressive turnout thus far. 64 images have already been submitted to the challenge, and we've only been open for just over 4 days! We will be accepting entries until end of day June 9 (GMT) so if you haven't had a chance to submit yours yet, don't worry as there is still plenty of time to get in on the action.

Maximum number of photos that you can submit is 3.

If you've already submitted 3 and would like to replace 1 or more of your entries, you may do so at your leisure. Please take care not to remove anyone elses' photo by mistake, as there is no UNDO on smugmug. If you need help, ask me, and I will gladly assist you.

Even if you are not interested in joining the challenge this time around, please visit our challenge gallery and see what the D70 is capable of:

I know that the challengers would all appreciate any comments you may have for them concerning their wonderful photos, so please feel free to post your remarks to the gallery by clicking ADD COMMENT when viewing a particular photo. (Comments can be anonymous)

D70 Challenge #5 – Transportation

Transportation; U.K. term: transport (noun) - A means of traveling, or carrying people or goods, from one place to another.

Your challenge is to convey the essence of transportation however you see fit. How do you (or others) get from place to place? Do you fly around all day in a hot air balloon (I wish...sigh)? Perhaps you paddle to work in a sea kayak? Or taxi around in a Chinese rickshaw? Ever take a ride on a Jeepney? Whatever it may be, let's see it. You can submit up to 3 pictures for this challenge. I ask that you try to submit at least one photo that you feel strongly, or perhaps even uniquely, represents transportation in your neck of the woods. For example, I live in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, home of my nation's oldest subway system. I might submit a shot of a trolley car, or the tracks, or an interesting candid in my favorite underground train station… you get the idea.

I decided to change the rules a little bit here. We're going to extend the submission period to about 2 weeks, to give you all plenty of time to get your shots in. You can submit any picture you've taken with your D70. It is not necessary that the picture be taken during the 2 weeks of the challenge. That is up to you.

After the entry period is up, we will have about 5 days dedicated to voting and commenting. Voting details will be forthcoming in this same thread.

Those who have never submitted a photo to a prior D70 challenge, it is REALLY EASY, so please read on:

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR PHOTO IN 10 EASY STEPS* 1. Open your browser to http://d70.smugmug.com/

2. Click login at the top of your screen (if you see logout instead of login, skip to step 5)

3. In the email field, enter: [email protected]
4. In the password field, enter: D70sRock (this is case-sensitive)

5. Scroll down to the list of galleries and select: D70 Mini-Challenge #5

6. Once inside the gallery, click on the button that says "Add Photo", near the top of the screen.

7. Smugmug offers 5 different ways to upload an image. Choose one of them and send your photo so smugmug.

8. Once your photo has been uploaded, find it within the gallery and click on it.

9. Below your photo, you will find a dropdown combo box that says "PHOTO TOOLS". Click on this and select "Edit Caption (Single)"

10. When adding your caption, be sure to include your dpreview UserID so we know who took the picture. Click UPDATE at the bottom of the screen and you're done.

That's all there is to it. When you are all set, be sure to logout of smugmug by clicking logout at the top of your screen. As an optional step, if you want to leave a background comment along with your image you can do so now.

Keep in mind that this is a site for all to use ONLY to post images in the Challenge galleries. Please be respectful and careful of not deleting images posted by others when the galleries are created.

After you have submitted an entry, please post a link to it within this thread. Posting a link to the gallery @smugmug will encourage viewers to leave comments within the gallery, rather than in this thread, though they can certainly do both!

Here goes... I've been out today looking for the ideal opportunity.

This is a 1940's MG car (british) with a reflection of a 21st century SUV.

Done a little work in photoshop, including:-
  • Cropping
  • Conversion to BW via Channels to parts of the image
  • Adjustment to Hue and Contrast of color sections
  • Conversion to Sepia of BW sections
  • Film Grain added to BW sections
  • Unsharp mask of color sections
This is the first time I have done something like this using Photoshop so I hope you like it. This is one image, just small amounts of manipulation:-

I took this specifically for the competition, but it didn't really work out as planned. The colors just weren't there as intended.

It seemed better as b&w. Hope you like it.

Jim

p.s. I can't decide if it should be cropped tighter to accentuate the driver's head. Opinions?

Jim-

I like the crop you chose. You could crom some off the left and/or bottom, but I like seeing the from of the car throuught the bridge. This shot works well in B&W.

Taken just yesterday, actually without this challenge in mind. I had JUST bought the 70-300mm ED and took it to the beach near LAX to get some test shots, so these two are from my first 30 minutes with the lens.

If I do a third submission it'll be something planned, and a little more abstract.

Funny, that VA plane has been shot a number of times before, or so Google reveals! One of the better (picture NOT taken by me, just for clarification):
