How do I set up my A50 to make the best portrait-photos ?

I have tried to adjust the settings for whitebalance (current I get best results with the Auto-setting), exposure (tried both +1/3 and +2/3) and slow shutter both on and off.

Most pictures taken in a normal roomlight becomes quite dark and I have adjust levels afterwards in Photoshop.

Can anyone give me advices (i.e. best settings) on how to make portrait-photos ?

Thanks in advance.--Best regards,

1. Choose Manual mode
2. No flash
3. Go outdoor
4. Choose Daylight WB
5. Shoot

For indoor:
2. Choose Automatic Flash setting
3. Tungsten WB (of course if there is tungsten light arround)
  • the rest is the same
For "really low-light":
  • Use indoor setting from above.
Before you shoot, try to fix the camera or lean against something. Or put the camera somewhere (out of your hands) and use Self Timer. It wont solve the dark image, but no blur at all.

And if you really want your images bright. I'll tell you, but the quality is low.
Use "really low-light" setting
Press Slow Shutter ON.

This last one should solve your problem, but the colors are ugly. Use Tungsten setting although it wont hepl too much.

Lars,

In addition to what Don has stated, I find that setting the flash mode to spot metering can substantially help in low light, indoor situations without flash.

Lars,

Forget what I said - thought you were asking about the S-10

Let me simpify.
Indoor in low light:
1. Choose Auto Flash Mode
2. Choose Daylight white balance
3. Set + - (Exp) to -1
4. Press zoom 4 times (its nice for portraits)
5. Shoot!

If it is too dark then change Exp from -1 to 0. If it is too bright, go to -1.5. We talk about people/faces dont we ?

Try the same with Slow shutter ON, but put the camera as described in previous post. And choose Tungsten WB. This will work 100%.

Thanks to everyone. Now I have some - in my opinion - very nice pictures of my co-workers. And the pictures only needed very little adjustments and cropping in PS.

Lars
