What's the best 50mm portrait lens. I'm only interested in image quality (resolution, sharpness, bokeh, color, contrast, etc.). I am not interested in price, build, speed, weight, macro capability, etc.
Thanks

Ken

the best is the 50/1.0L

I haven't heard much at all postitive about that lens, which has been discontinued, BTW. I've never used one, but I've read here several times that it's soft, big, heavy, and of course extremely expensive. Many claim that Canon only produced it because Nikon couldn't (as an example of why their mount is better).

No doubt about it. The 50 f/1.4.

Here's a quick snap at f1/4

I love my 50 f/1.4. As mentioned above, it gets really sharp when stopped down, but also lets you do wonderful portraits with the eyes sharp and everything else going soft by openning up to 1.4.

A definite bargin

Had my 1.4 for a week now, totally amazing, can't wait to use it on the MK II - but who knows how long that will be before I get it!! Been on order for 4 weeks now. Will carry on with the D60 for now.

Had the 1.8 for two days then returned it, just couldn't get on with it.

I haven't tried the Canon 50/1.4, so can't compare. But I've been very pleased with the results of the Sigma 50/2.8 EX Macro. Great bokeh (similar to a Leica 50 Summicron signature), fairly sharp wide open, and focuses down to 1:1.

... isn't that great. If you need f/1.0 it's the only game in town, but the 50mm f/1.4 leaves nothing to be desired.

It's very expensive.

I don't believe in fate, but I do believe in f/8!

Dear Bill,

Thanks for your imput and sample. Nice gallery by the way!

Ken

Dear Dan,

Interesting. I have an M6/50 Summicron, So I know what you're talking about!

Ken

Great gallery! What, is everyone here a pro?!

Any, thanks for the imput. There seems to be a consensus around here.

Ken

Dear Bryan,

Thanks so much. I read some of your review on your website. I will definitely finish it before making up my mind. The side-by-side comparison is great! Keep up the good work! I love the pictures!

I've had several 50 1.4 lenses and they have all been softer then my 50 1.8 mkI at 1.8. The 1.0 at 1.8 was better then my mkI. The portraits that I took with it came out better then my other lenses. I had trouble with it at 1.0 but anyone will if the AF on your camera is off even in the very slightest. The part that was in focus was fairly sharp.

Most of the bad comments about the 1.0 are from people that have never used it. I have used it and it is a terrific lens. What a beautiful piece of glass.
It's very expensive.

Thanks Greg, the side-by-side comparison makes the 1.4 look really good, brighter than any of the zooms.
