Problems with New 1D MkII - Should I Accept This?

...you have a camera that is functioning properly. I went through 3 1D MkI's before I got one without a defect, and I went through 2 MkII's so far, with the third one on the way. I understand your frustration, but I would take a working (even if slightly used) MkII over a new yet less-than-functional. That is just me, though. Another thing to consider (maybe it was already mentioned- I didn't read all the replies)- your CF card is what determines the number that is displayed. And to add to the other replies I did read, my 1Ds had dust on the sensor right out of the box. Just one of those things, I guess. I would keep it and keep shooting, but again that is just me. Good luck!

Everyone (and I do mean everyone) has to open the mirror box area to air beofre taking a picture that would show dust spots.

Steven
I'm not sure, but I've always wondered if they almost all come with
dust on the sensor straight from the factory.

My 10D seemed that way (I think), and my 1D Mark II seemed that
way.

I cleaned my 10D once, after owning it for 3 weeks, then never needed
to again. But I don't shoot at above F/9 very often.

Just finished cleaning my 1D Mark II, last Wednesday night.

We'll see when it needs to be cleaned again.

I asked them, and they told me it was a return (the person decided it was "too much" camera for them).

Everything is in pristine condition. None of the software packages
had been opened. I knew it because the battery was fully charged
and flash exposure compensation was set on the camera (along with
one custom function changed).

I think we'll be OK.
Hi

My New 1D MkII turned up yesterday, on opening the package I found
that all the items in the box had already been opened and put back
in the box,

Vicky, I'm about to pick up a second Mk2 from Jessops. Could you name the online store for the price match.

Many Thanks,
Kev

p.s. as per others, my thoughts are to simply test yours thouroughly - same as you would a new new one so to speak. as well as areas mentioned; hot pixels, viewfinder accuracy and af accuracy are key points. many of these things i would test (albeit in a simplified way after the intial checks) on a regular basis. like a manual slr camera user might check apertures, shutter speeds etc prior to a wedding shoot.
Thanks for your comments, I think you are right, it was just that
NewCar thing, I suppose I was more dissapointed that someone had
got to it first,

I did manage to get the store to pricematch an online outfit (Who
had no stock anyway), ended up paying £2920 UK Still about $5150
well above US price but not bad for the UK!!

So Suppose I will go play with it tomorrow! ;)
I understand the desire to open the plastic yourself and smell the
chemicals, but of it is working properly, I wouldn't worry about
this. I would just use it and be happy I had one.

... two Mk. II's and a bunch of L lenses cost less than a cheap new auto ... so keep your old auto for a couple more years, and get the cameras instead.
Ken
Hi Vicky,

If the camera is in perfect shape other than some shots taken and a
dusty sensor I would keep it. You will need to be able to clean
the sensor in the future after you use it. Both of my MKII's were
untouched but they both had dust on the sensors.

Mike

I want to be doing what your doing if you can afford 2 mk2.

Fill us in.

I don't believe in fate, but I do believe in f/8!

If it was returned because of a problem, obviously you don't want it. On the other hand, if it was tested in the store by a person interested in the camera, or if it was returned because someone decided they didn't want the camera for non-defect related reasons, then you might as well keep the camera. My camera was clearly unopened when I bought it and it had dust on the sensor.

If your software packages were sealed, it was probably examined in the store and not a resale. If all the goodies were opened, you should test the camera to see if there is a subtle defect that brought it back to the store. In any case, the people at the store should be able to provide a good explanation - if not I wouldn't buy from them again.

Hi

My New 1D MkII turned up yesterday, on opening the package I found
that all the items in the box had already been opened and put back
in the box,

The Shot Counter Read 100-0136 so the camera had already been used
for 136 shots,

On taking a couple of test shots I noticed numerous dust marks on
the sensor,

I called the supplying store who just played dumb and suggested I
contact Canon, anyway after a lot of backward and forwards the
result is

Canon will clean the senor if I return the unit to them, the store
will can't exchange the unit for a new one (As they don't have any
for the foreseeable future!), so my alternatives

1: Keep the camera they supplied and swallow the fact they supplied
me used goods as new

2: Return it for a refund, and be without a 1D MkII for heavens
knows how long, (Know ing if I do return it they will just put it
straight out to the next person on the waiting list

I am really torn, I hate being ripped off by a store, but really
not sure what to do

Advice/Opinions Appreciated

Vicky,

I You paid for a new camera, and that's what you deserve... You will have the camera for a long time, If you are not totally comfortable with the fact that it is a returned unit... That someone probably found a problem with, I would return it in a heartbeat, unless you need it to make a living, and would be out of work. You can live without it for a Month or two...

Best Regards,

Tony b.

I would return it, and threaten to contact the State Attorney General's Office of Consumer Affairs if the store doesn't pick up all costs to make you whole again.

This frankly is the end result of all the people on this site who think it okay to buy things, try them out and return whatever they don't like. That is what local stores have demos for, and this behavior by a selfish few will eventually result in the vendors taking a much less friendly attitude toward you and I if we have a legitimate return.

The store should go back to whoever returned this and tell him/her they refuse to accept the return because it wasn't in new condition.

I am particular when I spend money on things, and I want products that have not been opened since they left the factory.

Good luck whatever you decide.
