Dear All,

I have a 10D, and this morning I realized the penny-sized piece of plastic stuck on the mode dial selector (the one with the symbols Av, Tv, M, etc) popped out. I called Canon and they said I had to order the entire whole top assembly and pay $130 for it! Since I've memorized the placements of the different shooting modes, it's no problem for me, but it's a big inconvenience and it makes the camera look really ugly...

Has this happened to anyone else? Or better yet, has anyone ordered the top assembly for any other reason and have a spare mode selector plastic thing-y lying around? I'd gladly buy it!

Thanks in advance,

Johann

I have one for a D60. I could pull mine off and see if it has an identical mount that it'd work for you. I seem to recall they tweaked the color between these two cameras.

Jason,

That would be great! I think the D60's is silver (as opposed to the 10D's black), but anything would be better than what it is now.

Go to http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos10d/page4.asp and scroll down to the picture of the 10D. Now move your mouse over the picture and back. It toggles the two cameras. You couldn't have a better setup to see if this will work for you!

Yup, tried that. Note that the only portion I need is the silver portion, and NOT the whole dial. The main dial is still on the camera, with the symbols portion being the only missing peice. Thus, any piece should fit in it.

So did you simply lose the piece? If you still have it, can you glue it in place?

The piece is missing. It popped out somewhere. I checked my ar and have continuously looked around my apartment to no success. if i still had it, though, it looks like it's held in by glue (I noticed some residue), and should be no problem to stick it back if the piece is found.

I was taking a picture of my mother once on the west coast of Vancouver Island. I set my tripod in the gravel making up the beach, and took the picture. When finished, I took my camera and tripod inland. Then I realized my tripod had just lost one of its feet. The foot was about the same size as the rocks making up the gravel. My mother and I looked around for it, and suddenly my mother pointed at it saying, "There it is!" Just then a wave swallowed it up, and we never saw it again.

So I've been using the tripod without a foot. Since then one of the other feet also came off. I guess it's time to get a new tripod.

I feel like a wimp, I can't pry the D60 dial off. I could get a tool to pry it but you'd likely have to do the same to your 10D, which you probably wouldn't want to do.

For heavens sake think man!! You're now 2/3s of the way to once again having a perfectly level tripod. Rip off that other foot and go in peace. :)

Thanks for trying, Jason. Does just the silver portion of it come off? Or is it one piece of plastic?

It's actually two feet and one shin. Did you know tripods had shins?

Thanks Jason. Anybody else have a spare dial? =)
Thanks for trying, Jason. Does just the silver portion of it come
off? Or is it one piece of plastic?
It looks like the silver thing could come off but it almost feels
like it's molded on there. I've tried to pry it with a screwdriver
and it doesn't come off. Neither has the dial.... yet.

How old is the camera.? Is it under warranty?

The camera is over a year old, and is out of warranty, I believe. =(

The same thing happened to my 10D. I was shooting in a wooded area and glanced down and saw the dial was missing. Looked all around the area and could not find it. Fortuately found it in the trunk of my car where I had made a lens change. I put it back on using a small dab of GE silicon to fasten it. So far so good. I think it's incredible that Canon will not sell you this small dial by itself. The only reason it would come off is because of improper fastening on the original installation. Good luck on getting one to replace it.

you must be able to buy the part alone from Canon... or else, just write P Tv Av and M (and any more useful to you) on a piece of paper, then glue a ring of plastic you'll cut off any plastic packaging... and glue the whole thing on the dial. I wouldn't use super glue, I'd like to be able to remove it if needed... just in case I would get used to the positions/clicks of the dial, or find the thing too ugly.
