Photoing along just fine, periodically stoppiing to review. About
the 49th pic on a Lexar 256 meg stick, received message: "file
error". So I put a different stick in. Later when I tried again to
read the 256 stick, message became: "format error" (or something
like that). Can I recover the pix? Is the stick a bad one? (Never
had problem with Lexar's 128 meg at all. (Need pix for school
yearbook.)

Sorry to hear it. I had the same thing happen a few months ago
with a Lexar 256 Mb Select in my 717. The camera reviews on the
Imaging Resources site routinely recommend recovering lost images
with PhotoRescue:
http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue
The free demo version will analyze your card and tell you if
anything can be recovered. You then need to buy the program (about
$29 USD) to actually recover them. They guarantee that they can
successfully recover anything the demo version shows. In my case,
I had to tinker with settings for a bit, but did eventually recover
all but 3 out of 50 images. Your results may vary depending on
what's wrong.
As for the Lexar, it was pretty much shot and wouldn't format
anymore. Fortunately, Lexar has a 5 year warranty and they
replaced it without any problems. I've also never had any problems
with Memory Stcks and CF cards in various sizes.
