Decided to Buy an S10

Ed,
I have a 48 MB CFII flash card and it seems more than enough - holds
about 30 High rez pics at full compression and 75 High rez pics at
moderate compression.
I am also thinking of picking the S10. One reason is its support of CFII that I presume is something better than CFI. But indeed I have no idea of what is the difference between CFI and CFII. Could you shed me some light on it?

Thanks,
Wong

Wong,

I'm not an expert in CF cards, but my understanding is that CF II cards have significantly larger capacity and support such devices as the IBM 340 MB card.

USB is also important. My 1.5 MB files download in about 8-10 seconds!

Best wishes,
EdK

The basic physical difference between a CF type I card and a CF type II card is that the type II card is thicker than a type I card. The IBM Microdrive is a physical hard drive that has the same dimensions as a CF type II card, but it is not a CF card. By definition, a CF card is a solid state (i.e. no moving parts) device, while the Microdrive has an actual platter that spins inside of the housing. The fact that the S10 supports a CF type II card is what allows it to accept the Microdirve. However, there will be in the future actual CF type II cards that could also fit inside the S10.

Wong,

The following URL defines and illustrates the differences in storage.

Hope it helps.

Since the CF cards are solid state devices, judging from the thickness of the CF II card compare to CF I, I'd assume the CF II is like an apartment. 2 Layers instead of one. Basically, physical space is limited on the CF I cards.

Unless there are ways to pack more transistors in same amount of space, you'll have to go longer, wider or higher which I think is the case with CF II card.

Is the CF and CF II memory card use the same type of memory chip on the SDRAM?
