I have a Nikon N8008 with an AF Nikkor 28-85mm 3.5-4.5 lens. I want to sell my camera and perhaps keep the lens if it is a good lens to use with the D70 (as opposed to getting the kit lens). Would it be better to just get the kit lens and sell my old 28-85 lens?

Is it 28-85 type D? if type D then yes it work with d70.
But remember flash as I-TTL will not fully type D. read your
d70 manual lenses chart will show lenses and flash type etc.

I haven't bought the D70 yet. Do you think Nikon has the manual for it on their site to download? I also have the SB-24 flash to consider.

Your 28-85mm will work just fine on the D70. However, it will be like a 42-117mm lens, so you will probably miss the wide end. Now, the 18-70mm kit lens is a 28-105mm, which is more useful in my opinion (with the added wide end).

The 18-70mm also seems a lot better built than the 28-85, and it's an AF-S, so it focuses instantly and whisper quite. It's also a cheap lens, considering the wide angle.

I would get the D70 with the kit lens, but both will work fine.

Also check Bjørn Rørslett's reviews of both lenses here:
http://www.naturfotograf.com/

Click 'Lenses' on the left side menu, then scroll down past the introduction and click 'Zoom lenses 12-400mm'. He's been through most of Nikon's lenses, and rates the 18-70mm quite high, while the 28-85 is more mediocre in his opinion.

The lens will work fine, I have a simlar 35-135 AF and it works perfectly.

The D is only used to improve flash exposure for i-TTL with the internal flash or the SB-800, but I haven't been able to tell the difference.

I also have a SB-24 and it also works fine, you just have to set the camera to manual and the flash to Auto. Works pretty well, much better than the internal flash. And at least you can take pictures of people with their eyes open, which you often can't do with the internal flash or the SB-800.

Oooh, DON'T get that one!!! Get the SB-800 or the upcoming (and a bit cheaper) SB-600. Those are the ONLY two that will work with Nikon's new iTTL!!!

If you get the SB-24, you might as well save yourself more money and get a cheap Metz, as they will both only work in manual/auto mode on the D70.

I also don't think that he should buy one, but I got the impression that he already has one.

Ah, OK... My mistake... Yes, it will work fine, like Jola wrote, but if you were buying a new one, I just thought it would be silly without considering the options. Just wanted to warn you, but I guess I should've read the text properly... :-) So your SB-24 should work fine, and a lot better than the internal flash. But you'll have to do without the 'fancy' iTTL...
