Flash on camera (no bracket, no bounce, no modifier). Shot in AV or TV mode set to 4.5-5.0. ETTL with -1 set on a 550 EX. 70-200 F2.8L lens. 10D. The hairlight in the first image is a 500K candle power spotlight. Some really easy and quick PS. Couldn't be happier...

This is the look I'd like to achieve. Can't believe flash is on camera. I'll have to work with this when my camera gets back from the spa in Irvine.

Wayne, that "spa" comment cracked me up!

This is one of those things that is so simple, yet can produce great results. Just give it a shot. Go out and play. It works the best in open shade, but I even got some stuff I'm happy with in harsh sunlight.

ETTL has taken some hits, but I still use it a lot. You just have to learn the intricasies.

Gary -

First, these weren't "models" per se, but seniors.

Ettl is one of the most misunderstood technologies on the market. Once you figure it out, it gets easy, especially for what I feel is its strong suit, fill.

I don't FEL as a general rule. Usually only when I have a high contrast situation.

This is the type of situation I would have normally used reflectore in. The system was so fast to use, it roughly doubled my keepers per hour. That translates into money. Think about it. I usually give about 25 proofs per hour. Now, I get that in 30 minutes. More choices to the client, more money for me from reprint sales. In this case, time truly is money.

My first 1Dmk2 should arrive the early part of next week. I look forward to seeing what that beauty can do in the same circumstance.

Maybe you should take some time and really examine it.
I shoot models too, and find ETTL to be a pain. I just wish Canon
had a flash sytem that was tied to the metering system, instead of
the focus point. I ike to meter then recompose, and E-TTL is just
irritating, especially when you have to FEL for every shot.

I do know how to use it, so their is nothing more for me to examine. The flash exposure is tied to the focus point, so if you focus and recompose, the flash exposure will be off.

I agree, when used properly, it is accurate, but there are just time when using FEL is not ideal.

I shoot weddings using the same technique. Without doing FEL fof almost every shot I would be coming home with nothing but underexposed bride shots and horribly overexposed groom and reception shots... it is annoying and slows you down. Can't wait for ETTL 2 in a 10D replacement - that is supposed to be so much better.

I don't focus and recompose. I shoot a little loose and put the selected focus point on skin. Once you get used to it, very fast.

I also don't FEL on the fly. I don't think it's a viable option. Just loosen up a little, select a focus point (for me, usually second from the side, and then in portrait orientation) and fire away.

You could also try changing the custom setting so that the focus is tied to the * button. I am told that could make life a little easier.

If I had a model that looked like that, I'd love my Kodak DC-210 from 8 years ago. :)

That's just as slow and irritating, to be fiddling with the AF/MF switch during a shoot. But'll give it try anyway, I thought I read somewhere that it only works on the 1D/1D mkII, and not on the D30/60/10D.
Bint the focus to * or use manual focus, then the flash uses the
meteting system, instead of the active focus point...
