Canon 100-300L egrets with babies (pics)

Absolutely gorgeous, Daniella. At this point, I think the baby
egrets may mistake you for their mom now...

BTW, I've not seen panning shots of egrets from you or anyone in
this forum. Wanna be the leader in this?
panning? you mean to take it with slow shutter speed? no thanks :)
Hey, OT question. What lens are you using for these? Another OT
question, how come you're still using pbase? I thought you
graduated to exhibition gallery?
I was using the Canon 100-300 which is slow for focusing but enough for this.

I still use pbase.com for sharing photos here...otherwise too much bandwidth is taken and I only have 5gig per month at my other gallery.

Very nice, Daniella! I'm a fellow egret stalker from the South Bay, and have been shooting the colony at Almaden Lake with my Nikon 5700. You've got some awesome captures from Palo Alto, and I noticed there was a Great Egret (yellow bill, black feet) mixed in with the Snowy Egrets (black bill, yellow feet).

I really envy the shots of the chicks. They look like cotton balls with legs -lol.

Here's a couple of shots from Almaden. Give a shout if you ever get down this way.

Really...hey thanks..ill make the change
All of your white egret photos are of great egret. snowy have
black beak and yellow feet. they are also smaller than great egret.
The one with the orange beak in my photos is a great egret, all
with black beak are snowy.
I went to Palo Alto today and I got too many too show them all here
but here are some of the photos. Egrets are now nesting with
hungry babies to feed. Hard to beleive that they will become such
beautiful birds when you see them as baby :)

the full gallery. I never had so many keepers in one day :) all
taken in Palo Alto, California.

These are beautiful shots. They're nicely exposed, sharp yet still retain the soft quality of the subject. I think you've discovered the secret to getting close shots....find the nest :) I wouldn't mind owning that lens (very good price for L quality).

thanks :) I am trying different lenses, now a Canon 80-200 L F2.8 but I have not had much luck with it for flight, not sure why. My 100-300 gave me better result with that part.
Daniella,

Awesome shots here Daniella. Great to watch your bird photography
progress over time. Superb stuff here.

Cheers,

jim

yes that is really the secret isn't? I have been trying to get close to them, or to get them to fly in my direction..or to get them to do something interesting, and it was very hard. Now I can't keep up with what's goign on there....they really keep me buzy :)))

I wouldn't

almaden lake? where is it located? Is it that littel parc on the Almaden blvd? if you continue it goes to a lake in the Calero park?

yes probably the monitor. they were a little dark and I had to post process them to adjust the curves. Of course I adjust it according to what I see on my monitor but I used the color picker in PS to sample out the brightest area and it is not pure white still. In the full size photo you can see detail in those highlights, so it's really close to white but not. My original photos are really conservative for the highlights but at ISO 200 it is easy to bring out the shadow without getting too much noise..so I really exposed for the brightest highlights.

difficult lighting too, very strong harsh sun.
Some of your whites look a bit hot, as you said it may be a monitor
calibration issue, I stuck the spyder on on Monday and my profile
etc all checked out OK. That said every monitor is going to be
slightly different, we have 6 LaCie 21" monitors here that all look
slightly different even when profiled right, I digress, nice work.
